  • NEW MONTHLY NWS WAKEFIELD (KAKQ) PRODUCT       "The CoCoRaHS Team here at NWS Wakefield have created a new feature for our wonderful volunteers. This new feature is a monthly rainfall (sometimes snow!) summary that will show you in text and map form how your daily observations make a difference. The month of April had a very good and complete data set that combined well with other automated observations across the region. Thank you to ALL of YOU that made this possible!!! Here is the April CoCoRaHS climate summary in Adobe .pdf format to view at your leisure. Click here: http://genserva.com/acon/NWSAKQ_April2013_CoCoRaHS_Summary.pdf

Thanks again for all that you do! Your data and efforts really do matter.

    Sincerely,

Bridget De Rosa & the CoCoRaHS Team" | bridget.derosa@noaa.gov

Arlington - " AFTER TWO STRAIGHT MONTHS OF BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES...THE MONTHLY AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR APRIL WAS AROUND TWO DEGREES ABOVE THE 1981-2010 NORMAL. THE PAST SIX YEARS HAVE FEATURED ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES FOR APRIL. HOWEVER...THE MONTH ENDED ON A COOL NOTE AS 9 OF THE LAST 11 DAYS RECORDED BELOW NORMAL AVERAGE TEMPERATURES. A SUMMER-LIKE PERIOD FROM THE 8TH-11TH FEATURED FOUR STRAIGHT DAYS OF AT LEAST 80 DEGREES. 2013 WAS ONLY THE SIXTH YEAR ON RECORD WITH AT LEAST FOUR CONSECUTIVE 80-DEGREE DAYS THROUGH THE FIRST HALF OF APRIL. THE HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 91 DEGREES ON THE 10TH SET A DAILY RECORD HIGH FOR WASHINGTON DC. IT BROKE THE OLD RECORD OF 89 SET IN 1922. RAINFALL FOR THE MONTH WAS SLIGHTLY BELOW NORMAL. HALF OF THE MONTHLY PRECIPITATION FELL ON THE 19TH. A 53 MPH WIND GUST WAS RECORDED ON THE 19TH WHEN A THUNDERSTORM MOVED THROUGH THE NATIONAL AIRPORT. " - [ + - ] - from NWS Sterling, VA

Bridgewater - from Clayton Towers: " The total snowfall for this past winter amounted to 22 inches which is about normal. There wasn't any snow in April. We could use a little more rain. Getting dry. April was a quiet month! " - [ + - ]

Chantilly - from Russ Topping: " April warmed up fast and gave us a glimpse of summer, but ended much cooler. The mean monthly temperature was 57.1° (+2.7°). The mean high temperature was 69.0° (+2.3°) and the mean low temperature was 45.3° (+3.2°). The previous record high temperature of 77° was shattered on the 10th (91.5°). The record high was tied on the 11th (87.3°). A record high low temp of 59.4° was set on the 10th. So much for April showers. April precipitation was only 2.45" (-1.02"). A large portion of that fell on the 19th (1.27"), when we broke the previous daily record. *Please note, anemometer is currently partially obstructed from the North and East " - [ + - ]

Dulles - from NWS Sterling (KLWX): " AFTER TWO STRAIGHT MONTHS OF BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES...THE MONTHLY AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR APRIL WAS ALMOST TWO DEGREES ABOVE THE 1981-2010 NORMAL. THE LOW TEMPERATURE OF 22 DEGREES ON THE 4TH TIED THE DAILY RECORD LOW FOR DULLES THAT WAS PREVIOUSLY SET IN 1965. IT WAS THE LOWEST TEMPERATURE DURING APRIL SINCE 7 APRIL 2002 WHEN IT WAS ALSO 22 DEGREES. A SUMMER-LIKE PERIOD FROM THE 8TH-11TH FEATURED FOUR STRAIGHT DAYS OF AT LEAST 80 DEGREES. 2013 WAS ONLY THE SECOND YEAR ON RECORD THAT RECORDED FOUR CONSECUTIVE 80-DEGREE DAYS THROUGH THE FIRST HALF OF APRIL /THE OTHER WAS 5-8 APRIL 2010/. THE HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 89 DEGREES ON THE 10TH SET A DAILY RECORD HIGH FOR DULLES. IT BROKE THE OLD RECORD OF 78 SET IN 1922. RAINFALL FOR THE MONTH WAS BELOW NORMAL.
