SUMMARY OF
CLIMATOLOGICAL DATA
AUGUST 2006
...ABOVE AVERAGE TEMPERATURES ALL AREAS...
BELOW NORMAL RAINFALL FOR MOST OF VIRGINIA
WETTER THAN NORMAL MANY AREAS OF NORTH CAROLINA
AND ALL AREAS OF SOUTH CAROLINA...
Thunderstorms and Tropical Storm Ernesto provided much needed rains for the
middle and southern areas of our region; unfortunately, the northern extremes
didn't benefit from either. At month's end, Ernesto provided a deluge as it came
ashore south-southwest of Wilmington, NC with the southern coastal
areas there receiving nearly 8-10" in some locales.
A dominant high pressure dome over the South and Southeast United States produced
the hot weather with temperatures reaching the lower 100s across the 3-state area.
In the second half of the month, the high pressure axis (west to east) shfited offshore.

- Lowell reports:
" Wettest and third hottest summer in the last 26 years.
August was humid, warmer and much drier than average with only four days
with measurable rain. Only one other year in the last 26 years had four
days or less which was 1995. It was the driest August since 1998. Only
1989 with 0.38 inches and 1998 with 0.81 inches were drier.
The August mean average temperature was 77.8 °F that was a +2.3°F
departure and made it the 6th warmest in the last 26 years.
The 1.00 inch of rain for August was a -2.39 inch departure. The high
humidity and high dew point temperatures made August feel warmer than it
really was. The highest dew point here occurred on the 7th and was a new
record for August; however, dew point records were recorded here only
since 2003.
The highest temperature for the year here was 98°F on August 3rd.
This was the highest temperature recorded here since July 27th 2005.
The 78°F minimum temperature on the 2nd and 3rd was the
highest ever recorded in August in the last 26 years. The 88°F daily
mean temperature on the 3rd was also the highest ever recorded in
August in the last 26 years.
The maximum wind gust was only 22 mph from the east that
occurred on the 31st at 2214 preceding the approach of
tropical storm Ernesto. The month's total wind run was
512.8 miles which was the second lowest wind run for August
in the last five years since wind run records were started at
this station.
The average temperature for the summer season of June, July, and August
was 77.3°F for a +1.7°F departure. This was the third warmest summer
in the last 26 years. Only 2002 with a record average of 78.0°F and in 2nd
place 77.6°F that occurred in 2005 were higher. But the summer was the wettest
in the last 26 years with a total of 20.52 inches which is a
departure of +9.29 inches for the season. The previous 26-year record was
17.19 inches in 2000. This record was a result of June's 14.38 inches
which was the wettest month we have ever had at this station.
11 daily records were set:
(26-Years of records) -
2 HIGH maximum temperature: 3, 7;
6 HIGH minimum temperature: 1, 2, 3, 4, 28, 29;
1 LOW minimum temperature: 12;
1 LOW range temperature: 10;
1 HIGH precipitation: 7.

Precipitation for the month was .05 inches above normal.
Precipitation for the year is now 1.32 inches above normal. The
average temperature for August was 3.1 degrees above normal.
For the first 27 days of August, we got only .07 inches of
rain. For the next 5 days, including the first day of September, we
received nearly 6 inches. We went from dust to mud.
We got very little damaged from Ernesto. Instead of getting
5-10 inches of rain as was earlier forecasted, we got only 2.07. Our
basement stayed dry. We were lucky! However, our corn went flat from
the rain and rain. It's flat as a pancake!

"
August 2006 brought a continuation of the heat that was July's
trademark. August 3rd's high of 101° is the
highest temperature I have ever
recorded in either Stafford or Ladysmith, VA since 1999. From the 1st
through 27th of the month, rain only fell on the 10th. The remnants of
Tropical Storm Ernesto along with the passage of a cold front brought some
additional rainfall at the end of the month; however, the summer drought
continues. Barometer suffered some malfunctions this month but will be back
online for September.

A warmer and drier August compared to those over the past 30 years. High pressure
dominated the SE US but shifted to offshore late in the month. The month
would have been extremely dry except for the tropical moisture from TS Ernesto which covered
eastern SE VA on the 30th and 31st ahead of a cold front moving in from the west.

Raleigh
- NWS Raleigh (RAH) reports:
"
August 2006 was a predominately hot and dry month, statewide. Consequently, incipient
abnormally dry areas across much of northern and central North Carolina
were once again declared a region of moderate drought by August 25.
However, the hot and dry pattern abruptly ended during the last two days of
the month, when a cold front and a tropical storm produced thunderstorms,
heavy rain, flooding, and cooling temperatures. The resultant heavy rain
during the last two days of the month then eliminated the moderate drought
conditions over central North Carolina.
