  • Woodstock, Virginia Station WOO Closes   Longtime Member Lauck Walton writes: "WOO is 'off the air'. I'm at home with hospice care, and I won't be sending in my August figures. I've really enjoyed my weather work these thirty years. Thanks for all you do and a farewell to you and the other weather watchers." Editor's note: Lauck... thanks for your uninterrupted contributions these past 20 years with ACON - VA/NC/SC and for the 30 years over which you kept records and shared them with us. Peace be with you.

  • Calling All Educators! Join the "CoCoRaHS School Network"!   With the beginning of school right around the corner, we want to make our educators out there aware of CoCoRaHS activities for K-12 teachers. With over 500 educators across the country who are already involved, the CoCoRaHS Education Team is continuing to develop and pilot new materials and activities. Students really enjoy collecting data that are actually used by scientists, and teachers are finding that participating with CoCoRaHS meets many of their required standards for science, math and more! We invite all educators, teachers, students, schools, and home schools to join CoCoRaHS! If you or someone you know is interested in becoming part of the "CoCoRaHS School Network", or for more information, please e-mail: education@cocorahs.org

  • SAILS: A New Way Doppler Radar Scans the Sky   A new software upgrade installed at the National Weather Service (NWS) Wakefield Doppler radar (KAKQ), is improving severe weather operations. The software change allows the WSR-88D radar to obtain the lowest level radar scan more frequently during severe weather events. Check out the details here: http://www.weather.gov/media/akq/miscNEWS/sails.pdf

    Virginia:

Arlington/Washington, D.C. - " THE MONTHLY AVERAGE TEMPERATURE IN WASHINGTON THIS AUGUST WAS SLIGHTLY BELOW NORMAL. RAINFALL FOR THE MONTH WAS SLIGHTLY ABOVE NORMAL. DAILY RAINFALL OF 1.60 INCHES ON THE 12TH MARKED THE WETTEST AUGUST DAY SINCE 2011 WHEN 3.33 INCHES FELL ON THE 27TH. THIS WAS ALSO THE WETTEST AUGUST OVERALL SINCE THAT YEAR. THERE WERE ONLY 3 DAYS THIS MONTH WHERE THE MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE REACHED OR EXCEEDED 90 DEGREES. THIS IS THE FEWEST NUMBER OF 90 DEGREE OR HOTTER DAYS IN THE MONTH OF AUGUST IN TEN YEARS...SINCE 2004 WHEN THERE WAS ONLY ONE. " - [ - + ] - from NWS Sterling, VA

The mean high temperature was 83.8° (-2.8°) and the mean low temperature was 64.0° (-0.2°). No temperature records were set. We barely got above 90° twice, but I won’t complain! August precipitation of 5.98” was above average (+2.45”). No precipitation records were set. Thunderstorms were observed on the 3rd, 20th, and 31st. Dense fog was observed on the 21st. *Please note, anemometer is currently partially obstructed from the North and East " - [ - + ]

The average low temperature of 62.26 was the lowest August average temperature ever recorded at this site. On the precipitation side, the month was 1.34” above normal, with 5.39” measured. We are now almost 12” above normal for precipitation for the year. " - [ - + ]

Norfolk - from NWS Wakefield AKQ: " …Below normal temperatures and below normal precipitation characterized Norfolk weather in August… The average temperature at Norfolk International Airport was 77.0 degrees, which was 0.9 degree below normal. The average high temperature was 82.7 degrees or 2.4 degrees below normal. The average low temperature was 71.2 degrees or 0.2 degrees below normal. The highest temperature was 93 degrees on the 31st. The lowest temperature was 67 degrees on the 9th and 15th. There was 1 day with a maximum temperature above 90 degrees, which is 6 days below normal. Precipitation came in at 3.01 inches, which was 2.51 inches below normal. The greatest 24 hour total was 1.28 inches from the 1st into the 2nd. There were 9 days with measurable rainfall, which is 1.1 days below normal. There were 847 accumulated growing degree days (GDD), which was 50 GDD below the 1981-2010 normal of 897 GDD. The highest was on the 3rd, at 32 GDD. For 2014, precipitation has reached 32.41 inches, which is 0.47 inches above normal. The average temperature year-to-date is 60.8 degrees, which is 0.5 degrees below normal. There were no daily records set during August. " - [ - - ]

Portsmouth - from Bill Trotter: " August's average temperature of 77.1° was 1.1° BELOW NORMAL. Precipitation (4.61") was BELOW NORMAL by 1.06" or 81% of the August average during the period from 1976 to 2013. Rainfall for the year through August 31st was 44.75" (+10.65" or 131% of normal). To view the station monthly and year-to-date climatological summary (LCD) for this Portsmouth station, please click here. Frontal passages were noted on these dates: 7th, 13th, 19th, 24th, 28th. STATION RECORDS: 2nd - RAINFALL 1.35" [previous 0.95" 2004], 2nd - TEMPERATURE - Minimum high 75° [previous 79° 1985], 22nd - TEMPERATURE Maximum low 76° [ previous 75° 2010], 24th - WIND GUST 30mph [previous 26mph 2010]. - [ - - ]

Glen Allen - from Lowell Koontz: " The monthly mean temperature for August was 74.9 °F, a -2.8 °F mean temperature departure based on a six-year average and the second lowest on record. The 3.65 inches of rain for August was a -1.27 inch departure based on a six-year average and the driest August on record. The most intense rainfall occurred on the 12th when 2.54 inches fell with, 1.87 inches in one hour and 0.35 inches in 5 minutes. The 2.54 inches was 70% of the month’s total and the precipitation on the other 10 days was mostly light. The maximum temperature for August was only 94°F on the 31st. On only 4 days the maximum temperature was greater than or equal to 90 °F; this tied for the lowest number on record for August. The lowest minimum was 56 °F recorded on the 14th and tied for the record. The maximum wind gust was only 19 mph on the 14th and 31st as there were no strong thunderstorms. Before drawing too many conclusions between these tables, note Glen Allen has a six-year average and the Richmond International Airport uses a 30-year average. This summer was cooler than five of the past six years some of which have been record breaking for heat like 2010 and 2011. It is interesting that Glen Allen broke 29 daily records for August mainly for low temperatures in the past 6 years but the Airport broke no daily records for the past 117 years. This indicated this August was cooler than average but not cool enough to break any long-term records.

    " - [ - - ]

Richmond - from contributor Lowell Koontz (GAV): "The Richmond International Airport (KRIC) had 3.61 inches of rain for August and was the 51st driest August in the past 127 years. The lowest maximum temperature for the month was 76 °F on the 1st. The August highest maximum was 94 °F on the 31st.
