Arlington - From NWS WBC comes these notes: " DECEMBER 2007 FEATURED SLIGHTLY ABOVE NORMAL PRECIPITATION AND TEMPERATURES IN WASHINGTON. SNOWFALL WAS SLIGHTLY ABOVE NORMAL ...BUT IT FELL IN ONLY ONE STORM EARLY IN THE MONTH...ON THE 5TH. NO MEASURABLE SNOW OR SLEET FELL AFTER THE 5TH...ALTHOUGH TRACE AMOUNTS OF SNOW AND/OR SLEET FELL ON THE 7TH AND 15TH. AVERAGE TEMPERATURES FOR THE FIRST HALF OF DECEMBER WHERE NEARLY TWO DEGREES BELOW NORMAL...WHILE FOR THE LAST HALF OF THE MONTH THEY AVERAGED NEARLY SIX DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. TWO PERIODS OF HIGH WINDS OCCURRED DURING THE MONTH. A STRONG COLD FRONT ON THE 3RD USHERED IN HIGH WINDS AND MUCH COLDER AIR. HIGH WINDS ON THE 16TH AND 17TH WERE ASSOCIATED WITH A COASTAL STORM THAT DEEPENED DRAMATICALLY AS IT MOVED INTO NEW ENGLAND BY THE EVENING OF THE 16TH. " [ + + ]
Bridgewater - " The precipitation for the month was .56 inches above normal while the temperature was 4.1 degrees above normal. The average temperature for the year was above normal. The precipitation for the year was nearly 6 inches below normal. There were no big weather events that occurred during the year. " - [ + + ] - report from Clayton
Centreville - Paul sends these notes: " With temperatures running a little above normal for the Yule fest, Santa, his reindeer along with "Rudy" had a spring like welcome to sunny Centreville. By noontime with the jolly gift giver well on his way and wrapping and ribbons snuggly in the compactor, the temperature registered a comfortable 46°; also the average daily maximum for the month. The high end of the temperature scale was reached on December 12th with a 62° reading; a good distance away from the December record of 79° set back in 1998. Our average temperature of 39° was just 3.3° above our suggested value of 35.7°. On the 6th, 17° marked the low spot of a rather brief frigid period of the month. No other days recorded readings in the teens, and only eight days saw lows in the 20's. The low average for December came in at 32.3°; 6.8° above our computed 25.5° which is just a few tenths off from the average deviation of average lows for the year. That happens to be 6.8° above the published average low. Precipitation amounted to 100% of the monthly average value; 2.79" from rain, 0.23" coming from melted snow. And while in the subject of snow, we were treated to 3.1" on December 5th, some of which managed to remain on the ground in spots until the temperature and some rainfall melted what still survived. A slight lack of snow early in the winter season was overcome by the December 5th event and gave us a surplus of 0.6" for the year. Happy snowboarding! " - [ + -/+ ] - notes from Paul
Chantilly - Russ Topping reports: " December showed a slight wrinkle in the dominant pattern for 2007... temperatures above normal again, but precipitation actually normal. The average temperature was 3.6° above normal. Record low high temp occurred on the 6th (32.5°). Our max rainfall of 0.65" occurred on the 16th. Water restrictions remain in place. We ended 2007 at 12.32" below statistical average, for the year. For the month, precipitation was actually 0.04" above normal. It was a foggy month. Dense fog was observed on the 10th, 11th, 13th, 14th, 23rd and 31st. Snow fell on the 5th (2.6"). A trace of sleet and freezing rain on the 7th. Happy New Year!! *Please note, anemometer is currently partially obstructed " - [ + +]
Dulles - from NWS Sterling (KLWX) come these notes: " DECEMBER 2007 WAS NEARLY NORMAL AT DULLES. THE MONTH FEATURED SLIGHTLY BELOW NORMAL PRECIPITATION AND SLIGHTLY ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES. SNOWFALL WAS ABOUT AVERAGE THAT FELL IN ONE STORM EARLY IN THE MONTH...ON THE 5TH. NO MEASURABLE SNOW OR SLEET FELL AFTER THE 5TH...ALTHOUGH TRACE AMOUNTS OF SNOW AND/OR SLEET FELL ON THE 7TH AND 15TH. TWO PERIODS OF HIGH WINDS OCCURRED DURING THE MONTH. Herndon - Randy adds these notes: " THE DRIEST YEAR ON RECORD IS NOW IN THE BOOKS. DECEMBER WAS AT NORMAL IN TEMPERATURE, AND SLIGHTLY ABOVE NORMAL IN PRECIPITATION. HOWEVER, THERE WAS NO WAY WE WERE GOING TO MAKE UP THE 15 INCH PRECIPITATION DEFICIT GOING INTO THE MONTH. RAIN DID FALL OFF AND ON MOST OF THE MONTH, BUT MOST OF THE AMOUNTS WERE 0.20 TO 0.30 INCHES. OVERALL WE RECEIVED 3.30 INCHES SLIGHTLY ABOVE THE 3.04 MONTHLY AVERAGE. FOR THE YEAR, WE TOTALED ONLY 30.37 INCHES, WELL BELOW THE 45 INCHES THAT I HAVE AVERAGED OVER THE LAST 15 YEARS. WE DID GET OUR YEAR'S FIRST SNOWFALL WITH 3.1 INCHES FALLING ON THE 5TH. THE SNOW WAS ALL GONE BY THE 8TH WHEN OUR TEMPERATURES WERE BACK INTO THE 50S. THIS WAS THE ONLY SNOW SEEN DURING THE MONTH. DURING THE YEAR, WE HAD 8 MONTHS OF BELOW NORMAN RAINFALL AND ONLY 4 MONTHS OF ABOVE NORMAL PRECIP. AS FOR THE TEMPERATURES, THE AVERAGE HIGH WAS ALMOST 2 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL AND THE AVERAGE LOW WAS ALMOST 2 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL; GIVING US A NORMAL MONTH. " - [ + + ]
Ladysmith - Danny reports: " December did not bring much noteworthy weather. One minor winter event on the 5th brought a trace of snowfall. Drought was definitely the major headline for 2007, with 10 of 12 months bringing below normal precipitation and the annual total only 54% of 2006's annual total. A happy and prosperous 2008 to all! " - [ + - ]
