    Virginia:

    Arlington/Washington, D.C. - "WASHINGTON DC...REAGAN NATIONAL AIRPORT... THE AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE OF 51.2 DEGREES RANKED AS THE WARMEST DECEMBER ON RECORD. THIS BROKE THE PREVIOUS RECORD OF 45.6 DEGREES SET IN 1889 AND 1984 BY 5.6 DEGREES. THE AVERAGE MONTHLY MAXIMUM AND AVERAGE MONTHLY HIGH MINIMUM TEMPERATURE RECORDS WERE ALSO BROKEN LAST MONTH. THE AVERAGE MONTHLY MAXIMUM WAS 58.8 DEGREES WHICH BROKE THE PREVIOUS RECORD OF 54.9 SET IN 1889. THE AVERAGE MONTHLY MINIMUM WAS 43.5 DEGREES WHICH BROKE THE PREVIOUS RECORD OF 38.4 DEGREES SET IN 2012. TWO DAILY HIGH TEMPERATURE RECORDS AND FOUR DAILY HIGH MINIMUM TEMPERATURE RECORDS WERE TIED OR BROKEN LAST MONTH. ADDITIONALLY...THE MINIMUM TEMPERATURE OF 60 DEGREES ON THE 24TH WAS THE HIGHEST DAILY MINIMUM TEMPERATURE EVER RECORDED DURING THE MONTH OF DECEMBER. THE PREVIOUS RECORD WAS 59 SET ON DECEMBER 5TH 1973. BETWEEN THE 22ND AND THE 27TH...THE TEMPERATURE DID NOT FALL BELOW 50 DEGREES FOR 6 CONSECUTIVE DAYS. THIS TIES THE LONGEST RECORDED STRETCH OF CONSECUTIVE DECEMBER DAYS AT OR ABOVE 50 DEGREES. THE ONLY OTHER TIME THIS WAS OBSERVED WAS IN 1982 FROM THE 1ST THROUGH THE 6TH. MONTHLY PRECIPITATION WAS ALSO ABOVE NORMAL...AND RANKED AS 20TH HIGHEST ON RECORD FOR DECEMBER. A RECORD DAILY MAXIMUM RAINFALL OF 1.67 INCHES WAS SET ON THE 23RD...BREAKING THE OLD RECORD OF 1.30 SET IN 1907. FOR ONLY THE 7TH TIME ON RECORD...NO SNOWFALL WAS OBSERVED DURING THE MONTH OF DECEMBER. OTHER YEARS WHERE NOT EVEN A TRACE OF SNOWFALL WAS OBSERVED IN DECEMBER INCLUDE 2001...1994...1991...1972...1889 AND 1888. RECORDS IN WASHINGTON DC DATE BACK TO 1871. " - [ + + ] - from NWS Sterling, VA

    Chantilly - " Extreme December temperatures noted as much above average and precipitation above average. The mean monthly temperature was 49.6 (+13.0). The mean high temperature was 58.4 (+12.4) and the mean low temperature was 40.7 (+13.6). This was the warmest December on record at my site. Many maximum temperature records were broken. A record high temperature was tied on the 12th (73) and broken on the 13th (73), 14th (69), and 24th (71). A record high minimum temperature was set on the 14th (56), 24th (63, an all-time record high daily minimum for December), 25th (59), 26th (52), and tied on the 27th (52). December precipitation of 3.65 was above average (+0.69). No snow was observed thus far, for the winter of 2015-16. Dense fog was noted frequently (Dec. 1-2,9-10,13,17,23-25,29-31). *Please note, anemometer is currently partially obstructed from the North and East " - [ + + ] - from member Russ Toping

THIS BROKE THE PREVIOUS RECORD OF 43.3 DEGREES SET IN 1984 BY 5.4 DEGREES. THE AVERAGE MONTHLY MAXIMUM AND AVERAGE MONTHLY HIGH MINIMUM TEMPERATURE RECORDS WERE ALSO BROKEN LAST MONTH. THE AVERAGE MONTHLY MAXIMUM WAS 57.7 DEGREES WHICH BROKE THE PREVIOUS RECORD OF 54.3 SET IN 1984. THE AVERAGE MONTHLY MINIMUM WAS 39.6 DEGREES WHICH BROKE THE PREVIOUS RECORD OF 33.7 DEGREES SET IN 1982. What is remarkable about this month was the breakdown on the number of warm days: > or = to 60 degrees 21, > or = to 70 degrees 7, > or = to 80 degrees 1. This shatters any previous record and the previous record warm month of 1984 is a distant second- not even close to December 2015 Record warm Decembers include: 1)2015 2)1984 3)1982 4)1978 and 5)1990. December 2015 Record Maximums: 12/12 74, 12/14 75, 12/24 81, 12/25 77, 12/27 75 and 12/29 76. High Minimums: 12/24 68 and 12/25 65. The temperatures ranged between a high of 74 and a low of 25 and was 10.6 degrees above normal. This December was the warmest December I have recorded at this site and set records for the warmest average high, the warmest average low and warmest low temperature. On the precipitation side, the month was 0.25 above normal, with 3.69 measured. We finished the year 2.32 below normal and we have had no snow so far this season. " - [ + + ]

    Glen Allen - from Lowell Koontz: " December was the warmest and second wettest on record at Glen Allen as the monthly mean temperature was 52.8 F, a +11.2 F departure from the seven-year average. December had its highest maximum of 76.2 F on December 12th and had 8 days of =70F and 12 days of =65F both being new records. On only 6 days did the minimum reach freezing or below which was a new record for December. The lowest temperature was 25F occurring on the 20th; only 2011 equaled this high minimum and no other Decembers had a higher value. The highest barometric pressure of the month was 30.74 inches recorded on the 5th. Almost all of the records for warmth were broken at Glen Allen in its short 7-year database. December didnt even record a trace of snow. The precipitation total for the month was 6.15 inches; only 2009 was higher with 8.44 inches. There were 14 days with measurable precipitation in December, tying the record. The total precipitation for the year was 50.93 inches. This was a +5.78 inch surplus. This was also one of the cloudiest Decembers with the last ten days of the month being cloudy. This month also had the highest average relative humidity of 80.2%, a new record not just for December but for all months. This was a factor in giving this month the lowest daily average temperature range for December of 18.1F. " - [ + + ]

    Richmond - from contributor Lowell Koontz (GAV): " The mean temperature for the Richmond International Airport was 52.1 F which was the warmest in the past 135 years (Records since 1880). The previous record was 51.2 F in 1889. The minimum temperature of 65F on the 24th set a new high minimum for December; the previous record was 63 F on Dec 8, 1951. Christmas day was the warmest on record for the date with a daily mean of 69.5F. Only three December days have been warmer Dec 6th & 7th of 1998 and Dec 16th of 1971. The lowest maximum temperature of 46 F for December occurred on the 19th which is now the warmest December low maximum temperature on record; the previous record was 45 F recorded in 2012. Richmonds December minimum temperature was 25F and tied the record set in 2011 & 1994. Richmonds lowest daily mean temperature for December was 36.0F which was the 2nd highest recorded in the past 118 years; only 2011 was higher with 36.5 F. December didnt even have a trace of snow which has happened approximately 15 times before 2015 since 1880. The 30-year average snowfall for December is 2.1 inches. The 5.94 inches of precipitation for December made it the 8th wettest December in the past 128 years. The total precipitation for the year was 49.21 inches which was a +5.61 inch surplus for 2015. The Airport also set 4 daily maximum temperature records and two high minimum temperature records. " - [ + + ]
