    Arlington/Washington, D.C. -from NWS LWX, Sterling, VA: " THE MONTHLY AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS ABOVE NORMAL. MONTHLY PRECIPITATION WAS SLIGHTLY BELOW NORMAL. SNOWFALL WAS BELOW NORMAL. LAST MONTH MARKED THE THIRD CONSECUTIVE DECEMBER WITHOUT MEASURABLE SNOWFALL. THIS IS THE ONLY TIME THREE DECEMBERS IN A ROW HAVE NOT HAD MEASURABLE SNOWFALL IN THE WASHINGTON DC AREA SINCE SNOWFALL RECORDS BEGAN IN 1884. LAST MONTH WAS ALSO THE SIXTH STRAIGHT DECEMBER TO RANK WARMER THAN NORMAL. HOWEVER...IT WAS THE FIRST SINCE 2011 TO NOT HAVE AT LEAST ONE DAY REACHING 70 DEGREES. CLIMATE RECORDS HAVE BEEN KEPT AT RONALD REAGAN NATIONAL AIRPORT SINCE AUGUST OF 1941. ADDITIONAL TEMPERATURE RECORDS FOR THE WASHINGTON DC AREA EXTEND BACK TO JANUARY OF 1872. PRECIPITATION RECORDS EXTEND BACK TO JANUARY OF 1871. SNOWFALL RECORDS BEGAN IN JANUARY OF 1884. " - [ + - ]

    Chantilly - from Russ Topping: " The December mean monthly temperature was above normal and precipitation was below normal. The mean monthly temperature was 39.4° (+2.8°). The mean high temperature was 47.9° (+1.9°) and the mean low temperature was 30.9° (+3.8°). No temperature records were set or tied. December precipitation of 2.37” was 0.59” below normal. Measurable rainfall fell on 9 days. Maximum daily precipitation of 1.07” fell on the 6th, setting a new daily record. Dense fog was observed on the 24th. No trace of snow fell this month (-3.5”) for the 3rd straight December, but freezing rain was observed on the 17th. Please note, my anemometer is currently partially obstructed from the North and East " - [ + - ]

    Dulles -from NWS LWX, Sterling, VA - " THE MONTHLY AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS SLIGHTLY ABOVE NORMAL. MONTHLY PRECIPITATION WAS SLIGHTLY BELOW NORMAL. SNOWFALL WAS BELOW NORMAL. LAST MONTH MARKED THE THIRD CONSECUTIVE DECEMBER WITHOUT MEASURABLE SNOWFALL.     Herndon - from member Randy Ashby: " December was slightly above normal for temperature and below normal for precipitation. The temperatures ranged between a high of 68 and a low of 11 and was 0.2 degrees above normal. On the precipitation side, the month was 0.87” below normal, with 2.53” measured. We finished the year 7.43” below normal for precipitation. This was the 3rd driest year in the 22 years measuring at this site. We had our first snow sighting of the year on Dec 30 when we had a few snow flurries; there was no accumulation. " - [ + - ]

    Portsmouth - from Bill Trotter (POR): " The month's average temperature of 44.6° was 0.1° BELOW NORMAL. Precipitation (2.85") was BELOW NORMAL by 0.49" or 85% of the December average rainfall during the period from 1976 to 2015. Frontal passages occurred on the 6th, 8th, 12th (WARMFROPA), 14th, 15th (arctic), 16-17th (WARMFROPA), 18th, 22nd, 24th, 27th (WARMFROPA), 28th, and 29th. Frost occurred on the 2nd (light on car tops), 10th (car tops), 11th, 16th (few rooftops only), 20th (pm), 21st, 22nd, 30th, and 31st.     Glen Allen - from Lowell Koontz (GAV): " December was the third coldest and third driest on record at Glen Allen. The monthly mean temperature was 41.4°F, a -1.6°F departure from the eight-year average. December had its highest maximum of 68.2°F on December 1st but had only 3 days of =65°F for the month. On 16 days, the minimum reached freezing or below which was fourth greatest in December in the past 8-years. The lowest temperature was 13°F occurring on the 16th which was the lowest minimum ever recorded at Glen Allen in December. Glen Allen had two days the minimum temperature was below 15°F; the only other year this occurred was 2010. The lowest dew point on December 15th was -7.3°F which set a new record; the previous record was only -1.4°F in 2010. The highest barometric pressure for December was 30.70 inches recorded on the 19th which was the 3rd highest barometric pressure for December. The average daily pressure for December was 30.20 inches a new record for December. The previous record was 30.17 inches in 2014. December had a minor trace of sleet associated with a glaze on the 17th. The precipitation total for the month was 3.11 inches which was a 1.61 inch negative departure based on an eight-year average. There were 9 days with measurable precipitation in December and only December of 2011 had less. The total precipitation for the year was 47.73 inches which was a 1.54 inch surplus. Only 2010 had a lower average relative humidity of 64.2% which is the low record for December. " - [ - - ]

    Richmond - from contributor Lowell Koontz (GAV): " The mean temperature for the Richmond International Airport was 41.1°F which was exactly average. December was the 52nd warmest in the past 119 years. The minimum temperature of 15°F on the 16th was the lowest minimum in December since 2010 when 15°F was also recorded. The lowest maximum temperature of 29°F for December occurred on the 16th which was also the lowest since 2010. December didn’t even have a trace of frozen precipitation. This was the 17th year in the past 119 years that Richmond didn’t have a trace of snow or a measurable amount of snow in December. The 30-year average snowfall for December is 2.1 inches. The 2.80 inches of precipitation for December made it the 61st driest December in the past 129 years with a -0.46 inch departure. The total precipitation for 2016 was 52.75 inches which was a 9.15 inch surplus for the year. The airport also set 1 daily maximum precipitation record for the date on December 6th with 1.22 inches; the old record was 1.17 inches set in 1930. " - [ -/+ - ]

THE AVERAGE DAILY TEMPERATURE FOR DECEMBER WAS +0.5 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THERE WAS NO SEVERE WEATHER OR THUNDERSTORMS OBSERVED DURING THE MONTH. ON DECEMBER 17TH THERE WAS A TRACE OF FREEZING RAIN.
