    Virginia:

    Arlington/Washington, D.C. - "WASHINGTON DC...REAGAN NATIONAL AIRPORT... THE MONTHLY AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS BELOW NORMAL. MONTHLY PRECIPITATION WAS NEAR NORMAL...BUT MONTHLY SNOWFALL WAS WELL ABOVE NORMAL AND RANKED AS THE 8TH SNOWIEST JANUARY ON RECORD. WASHINGTON DC RECORDED ITS FIRST MEASURABLE SNOWFALL OF THE 2015- 16 WINTER SEASON ON THE 17TH. A PRELIMINARY RECORD DAILY SNOWFALL OF 11.3 INCHES WAS SET ON THE 23RD...BREAKING THE OLD RECORD OF 11.0 SET IN 1935. A PRELIMINARY STORM TOTAL SNOWFALL OF 17.8 INCHES ON THE 22ND-23RD WOULD TIE WITH FEBRUARY 5TH-6TH 2010 FOR THE 4TH LARGEST SNOWSTORM ON RECORD IN WASHINGTON DC. " - [ - - ] - from NWS Sterling, VA

    Chantilly - " January stood in sharp contrast to December’s monthly average temperature departure of +13° and lack of any snow. The cold returned and this January became the 2nd snowiest January with the snowiest January day on record, at this station. January temperatures were slightly below average and precipitation was much above average. The mean monthly temperature was 33.0° (-0.2°). The mean high temperature was 42.9° (+0.4°) and the mean low temperature was 23.1° (-0.8°). A record high temperature was broken on the 10th (60.0°). January precipitation of 4.48” was above average (+1.80”). After not observing the first inch of snow until January 22nd (7.2”), we received an all-time daily snowfall record 22.1” on the 23rd. The January, and season, snowfall total now stands at 29.4”. A daily record 1.88” of precipitation fell on the 23rd, as snow.     Seven Corners/Fairfax County - from member John Iekel: " A SHARP DEPARTURE FROM DECEMBER – THE AVERAGE HIGH WAS LOWER THAN DECEMBER’S AVERAGE MINIMUM. THE MEAN AVERAGE WAS 16.8 DEGREES COLDER THAN THAT OF DECEMBER. THE BLIZZARD OF JANUARY 22-24 WAS THE GREATEST SINGLE SNOWFALL I HAVE EVER OBSERVED AT THIS OR ANY STATION – A STORM TOTAL OF 28.50”. " - [ - + ]

MONTHLY SNOWFALL RANKED AS THE SECOND SNOWIEST JANUARY ON RECORD. DULLES RECORDED ITS FIRST MEASURABLE SNOWFALL OF THE 2015-16 WINTER SEASON ON THE 12TH. THIS RANKS AS THE 6TH LATEST FIRST MEASURABLE SNOWFALL ON RECORD. A PRELIMINARY RECORD DAILY SNOWFALL OF 22.1 INCHES WAS SET ON THE 23RD...BREAKING THE OLD RECORD OF 1.7 SET IN 1982. THIS IS ALSO THE RECORD HIGHEST SINGLE DAY SNOWFALL AMOUNT FOR THE ENTIRE MONTH OF JANUARY...BREAKING THE OLD RECORD OF 19.8 INCHES SET ON JANUARY 7TH 1996. A PRELIMINARY STORM TOTAL SNOWFALL OF 29.3 INCHES ON THE 22ND-23RD WOULD RANK AS THE 2ND LARGEST SNOWSTORM ON RECORD AT DULLES. A RECORD ALL-TIME 7 AM SNOW DEPTH OF 28 INCHES WAS SET ON THE 24TH...BREAKING THE OLD RECORD OF 26 INCHES SET ON FEBRUARY 10TH 2010. A RECORD DAILY RAINFALL OF 1.00 INCH WAS SET ON THE 10TH...BREAKING THE OLD RECORD OF 0.93 INCHES SET IN 1965. A RECORD DAILY PRECIPITATION AMOUNT IN THE FORM OF MELTED SNOW OF 1.88 INCHES WAS SET ON THE 23RD...BREAKING THE OLD RECORD OF 1.46 INCHES SET IN 1998.     Herndon - from member Randy Ashby: " January was below normal for temperature and above for precipitation. The temperatures ranged between a high of 63 and a low of 11 and was 1.56 degrees below normal. On the precipitation side, the month was 1.45” above normal, with 4.57” measured (2.87” of that came with the monster snow storm). We had our first measurable snow of the year on the 17th with 0.2” falling. This was followed up on the 20th with another 0.5” falling; then the monster snow storm on the 22/23rd when I measured 28.6”. This was the second most snow I have measured at this site following only the Jan 1996 storm of 29.4”. " - [ - + ]

    Portsmouth - from Bill Trotter: " The month's average temperature of 40.8° was 0.5° ABOVE NORMAL. Precipitation (4.75") was ABOVE NORMAL by 1.07" or 129% of the January average during the period from 1976 to 2015. At month's end, rainfall for the year totaled 4.75" (+1.07" or 107% of normal). Frontal passages: 4-5th, 10th, 12th, 15th, 16th, 18th, 20th, 23rd, 27th, and 29th. Frost was recorded on the 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 12th, 14th, 15th, 24th, and 25th. STATION RECORDS: 10th - TEMPERATURE TIED Maximum 66° [previous 2002], 12th - WIND GUST 38mph [previous 35mph 1983], 15th - RAINFALL 1.47" [previous 0.93" 1998], 22nd - WIND GUST 37mph [previous 33mph in 1997], 23rd - WIND GUST 38mph [previous 36mph in 2005], and 23rd - RAINFALL 1.11" [previous 0.83" 1998}.

    Glen Allen - from Lowell Koontz: " January’s monthly mean temperature was 36.7°F, a - 0.6°F departure and there were 4 days that the maximum temperature was 32°F or less. January had 23 days that the minimum temperature was 32°F or lower. The minimum of 10.8°F on the 19th is the fourth highest minimum temperature recorded for January. Only four days had a temperature of more than 60°F. The highest temperature this month was 66.1°F recorded on the last day. The maximum of 26.4°F on the 22nd was the lowest maximum for the month. The 33°F temperature range on the 25th was the largest temperature range for January. This January was the clearest since January 2012. The highest barometric pressure was 30.69 inches on January 5th which was the 2nd highest pressure ever recorded in January. The average relative humidity for January was 65 percent, the third highest on record, and the average maximum relative humidity was 86.5 percent which was the second highest maximum relative humidity for January. The precipitation for January was 3.96 inches, a departure of +0.83 inches and eight days with measurable precipitation. The snowfall for January was 16.4 inches which was a new record for all months and a +11.7 inches departure. The previous monthly record was 12.6 inches in 2010. The 15.1 inches was the highest snowstorm total. The previous record was 12.9 inches on December 18-19th 2009. The single day total of 9.1 inches on the 23rd was the second greatest on record. The previous record was 11.4 inches on January 30, 2010. The record number of days with measurable snow on the ground for January was 7 days in 2014; that was broken by the 8 days recorded this January. The maximum wind for the month was 36 mph on the 12th. The wind run record on January 23rd was 227 miles which was the 3rd greatest on record for any day. The highest on record is 284.1 miles on August 27, 2011 associated with tropical storm Irene.

    Richmond - from contributor Lowell Koontz (GAV): " The airport tied two daily records for January. The 4°F temperature range on January 23rd tied the lowest temperature range for the date. The second was 5.3 inches of snow recorded on the 23rd; the previous record was only 2.7 inches recorded in 1908. The 3.30 inches of precipitation was a departure of +0.26 inches making it the 72nd largest January rainfall amount since 1887. The mean temperature was 35.6 °F with a departure of -2.3 °F or the 40th lowest mean in 119 years. The 12.1 inches of snow for the month was the 11th greatest monthly snowfall total since 1898 and was also a departure of +7.9 inches. The record monthly total is 28.5 inches set in 1940. The 6.1 inches on the 22nd was the 14th largest snow in January and the 5.3 inches on the 23rd was the 19th largest snow in January. This January had 7 days with measurable snow on the ground which tied January 2004. The next year in the records with more was in 2000 with 9 days. " - [ - + ]
