  • PASSINGS - Member Lauck Walton, Woodstock, Virginia (WOO)   Long-time ACON VA/NC/SC member Lauck Walton, who last posted his monthly weather observations here in fall 2014, has died. During the years of his participation in ACON (20+), Lauck kept meticulous records and never missed a monthly posting of his data, earlier by sending reports through the USPS and then by migrating with us all to email! Glen Allen - from Lowell Koontz: " This July was much like July 2013 which was also wet and humid. This July was the second wettest and the second most humid July on record at this Glen Allen station. July 2013 was wetter and more humid with an average humidity of 74.8% which was only +1.1% more than this July. July 2013 was cloudier and the only one with a lower daily average temperature range than this July. July’s mean temperature was 78.4 the 3rd coolest July on record; only 2009 and 2014 were cooler. The lowest July maximum was 78°F on July 9th which was not only the lowest maximum on record for the date but the 3rd lowest for any July date at this station. The lowest minimum temperature during July was 62°F on July 16th and the highest temperature was 95°F on the 19th and 20th. The highest dew point temperature this month was 79.4°F on the 19th; this was the 3rd highest dew point recorded in July in the past 7 years. The 29.57 barometer on the 14th and 15th set a new record low reading for July which was associated with a strong squall line that some referred to as a weak derecho that moved from MN, KY, WV and south-west Virginia passing to our SW giving no impact to our area. The 5.15 inches of monthly precipitation was a departure of +1.13 inches. From June 30th to and including July 6th Glen Allen had 7 consecutive days with measurable rainfall and from July 16th to and including July 26th Glen Allen had 11 days with only 0.01 inches of rain; both being unusual. The mean temperature was -1.6°F below the average and the 3rd coolest in the past 7 years. There were only seven 90°F days which set a new low record for July. Glen Allen had 15 days in July with measurable precipitation which tied the record for July; the previous record was set in 2013. The maximum precipitation recorded in a day was 1.43 inches which took 3rd place; the record for the day is 2.42 inches in 2013. Thunder was heard on only 5 days during July, the second least on record for July and the average is 6.8 days. " - [ - + ]

Richmond - from contributor Lowell Koontz (GAV): " July at the airport was the coolest since 2009 but humid. The high humidity and cloudiness made for warmer nights and lower temperatures for the days. The average daily temperature range was 17.5°F the 11th lowest on record in the past 118 years. The record is only 1.1°F lower which occurred in 1959. The average maximum was 88.0°F a departure of -1.7°F and the 67th warmest in the past 118 years. The average minimum was 70.5°F a departure of +1.6°F and the 15th warmest in the past 118 years. The mean temperature was 79.2°F a departure of -0.1°F and the 37th warmest in the past 118 years. The lowest daily mean occurred on July 8th which was a warm 74.0°F which was the 8th highest in July since 1897. The only daily record for the month was a record high minimum temperature of 78°F on the 9th and only 6 Julys in the past 118 have had a higher minimum temperature; the previous record was 77°F in 1907. The 5.89 inches of rainfall made it the 39th wettest July in the past 118 years. July had 14 days of measurable rainfall; only 22 Julys in the past 118 have had more days of measurable rainfall. This July was also the wettest at the Airport since 2005 when 9.28 inches was recorded. The 5.89 inches was a departure of +1.38 inches for the month. " - [ - + ]
