  • STATE CLIMATE SERIES AT CoCoRAHs   Check-out the "CoCoRaHS State Climates" series page. This series ran as part of the CoCoRaHS Message of the Day during 2011. In putting together our series, we asked climatologists from each of the country's 50 states to write an informational short narrative summarizing their state's climate along with links to further resources. Some are short, some are long, some have catchy titles. The page below will give you a handy way of looking at each state's narrative as well as their climate summaries. View the series at http://www.cocorahs.org/Content.aspx?page=50StatesClimates.

Chantilly - from member Russ Topping: " The July mean monthly temperature was much above normal and precipitation was below normal. The mean monthly temperature was 80.8° (+4.1°). The mean high temperature was 91.0° (+3.1°) and the mean low temperature was 70.5° (+5.0°). A record minimum high temperature was set on the 4th (72°). Herndon - from member Randy Ashby: " July was above normal for temperature and precipitation. The temperatures ranged between a high of 99 and a low of 61 and was 2.3 degrees above normal. We had 18 days with the high at or above 90 degrees. My average high in July of 69.8 degrees tied the highest average high for this site. On the precipitation side, the month was 0.26” above normal, with 4.28” measured. On two days we had more than 1” of rain with thunderstorms. We are now about 1.6” above normal for precipitation for the year." - [ + + ]

Portsmouth - from Bill Trotter: " The month's average temperature of 82.7° was 2.7° ABOVE NORMAL. Precipitation (7.40") was ABOVE NORMAL by 1.82" or 133% of the July average rainfall during the period from 1976 to 2015. At month's end, rainfall for the year totaled 35.12" (+6.39" or 122% of normal). Frontal passages (significant): 2nd, 4th (warmfropa), 10th, 20th, & 29th. STATION RECORDS: The July 2016 average temperature of 82.7° was the 2nd WARMEST AVERAGE JULY TEMPERATURE in the station database to July 1976. The top 5 warmest Julys include: 1) 82.8° 1995 2) 82.7° 2016 3) 82.4° 1993 4) 82.3° 1987 5) 82.2° 1994. Glen Allen - from Lowell Koontz: " July was the second wettest July on record at the Glen Allen station. The 5.79 inches monthly precipitation was a departure of +1.63 inches. There were 15 days with measurable precipitation which ties the maximum number for July. The mean temperature of 81.1°F was +1.4°F departure for the eight year average and the 3rd hottest month on record. The record is 82.7°F in 2012. This July had 22 days with temperatures of >=90°F which tied the July record. The maximum temperature range for July was 25°F on the 14th which tied for the lowest monthly daily temperature range. The lowest daily temperature range was 8°F on the 4th which ties for the lowest daily range for any July. The lowest dew point temperature for July was 61°F on the 21st which is now the highest minimum dew point for July. The highest dew point was 79.7°F on the 24th; the eight year record is 80.9 °F. The highest heat index for July was 117.6°F on the 24th which tied the old record set in 2011. In contrast to all of July’s heat on July 3rd the high temperature was only 73.3°F which occurred at midnight with a daytime high of only 68°F at 1650 which is the coolest July day ever recorded at Glen Allen. It was the coolest July 3rd day at the airport since 1962 which made the heat that followed on the 5th seem even more uncomfortable. Rainfall amounts varied greatly over the area and the Richmond International Airport had only 4.47 inches. Glen Allen had 15 days with measurable precipitation which tied the record for July. The maximum precipitation recorded in a 24 hour period was 1.73 inches on the 18th and 19th which was the second greatest on record for July. The average relative humidity of 74.1 percent was the 3rd highest on record for July. However, the average daily maximum and the highest monthly minimum relative humidity both set records for July. These factors helped in giving July the third lowest temperature range of 19.5°F on record at Glen Allen. " - [ + + ]

Richmond - from contributor Lowell Koontz (GAV): " The Richmond International Airport average mean temperature was 79.8°F which made July the 26th warmest since 1897 with a departure of +0.5°F. The higher relative humidity helped lower the daily temperature range for the month to 18.5°F which is a departure of -1.7°F. This July had 16 days with temperatures of >=90°F which tied the July record in 2013. The maximum daily temperature range for the month was 25°F. Only seven years of the past 119 years had a lower temperature range for July. Only 24 Julys since 1897 have had a lower average daily temperature range! It is also surprising that the maximum temperature was only 71°F on July 3rd which was the coolest July 3rd since 1962. There are also only 15 Julys since 1897 that have had a lower monthly temperature than 71°F. The record low maximum temperature for July is 65°F set on July 21, 1939. The lowest minimum temperature recorded in July was only 61°F; only ten Julys have had warmer monthly minimum temperatures in the past 119 years. The Airport had only 4.47 inches of precipitation which was a departure of only - 0.04 inches. July was also the 64th wettest July on record and had -1.32 inches less than Glen Allen. The Richmond International Airport had no daily records set in July. " - [ + - ]
