  • Hail and Wind Storms of June 11th, 2014 - from the NWS Storm Prediction Center   Here are the SPC June 11th, 2014 storm reports for our three-state region: http://www.spc.noaa.gov/climo/reports/140611_rpts.html

  • GFDL Hurricane Model Arthur Ensemble - 2014 HFIP Demo - from the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory   One of our website visitors sent this link of interest and it looks like a good resource! It is set here to open to the ensemble forecast for Hurricane Arthur, late June to early July 2014: http://data1.gfdl.noaa.gov/hurricane/gfdl_ensemble/GFE_DEMO_2014.php?STORMID=01L&YMDH=2014070312_ARTHUR01L&prod=QV

  • SAILS: A New Way Doppler Radar Scans the Sky   A new software upgrade installed at the National Weather Service (NWS) Wakefield Doppler radar (KAKQ), is improving severe weather operations. The software change allows the WSR-88D radar to obtain the lowest level radar scan more frequently during severe weather events. Check out the details here: http://www.weather.gov/media/akq/miscNEWS/sails.pdf

  • Nags Head Fishing Pier Webcam   Here's a really nice streaming webcam from the Nags Head, North Carolina, Fishing Pier. One of our website visitors sent this link of interest, especially when- as with Hurricane Arthur- a tropical system roars up the coastal plain or offshore Carolinas and Virginia! Just click here: http://www.nagsheadpier.com/piercam.htm

  • Heavy Rain? Stay safe . . . Turn Around Don't Drown (TADD) - from the message of the day section at the CoCoRaHS website   "In a recent post, we highlight the National Weather Service's campaign 'Turn Around Don't Drown'. It is meant to inform people of the hazards of walking or driving a vehicle trough flood waters. Knowing what to do ahead of time when a flooding situation arises can help save your life. NOAA's site recommends several things when it comes to flooding: 'Monitor the NOAA Weather Radio, or your favorite news source for vital weather related information.' If flooding occurs, get to higher ground. Get out of areas subject to flooding. This includes dips, low spots, canyons, washes etc. Avoid areas already flooded, especially if the water is flowing fast. Do not attempt to cross flowing streams. Turn Around Don't Drown® Road beds may be washed out under flood waters. NEVER drive through flooded roadways. Turn Around Don't Drown® Do not camp or park your vehicle along streams and washes, particularly during threatening conditions. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize flood dangers."

Please take a few moments to visit NOAA's informative site at: TURN AROUND DON'T DROWN (http://www.nws.noaa.gov/os/water/tadd/).

  • Historical Database of Tornadoes - 1980-2012 - from Kevin Shaw of ACON DC/MD/DE   "I got this email from my friend Henry S down in TN (Retired NWS forecaster) ...pretty neat historical database of tornadoes! Check it out!" It includes a link to an interactive map showing all tornadoes which occurred across the U.S. from 1980 through 2012. http://storymaps.esri.com/stories/2014/tornadoes/#

  • There's A Place On Earth That Experiences 1.2 Million Lighting Strikes A Year   Kevin Shaw of ACON DC/MD/DE sends this interesting article about Venezuela's "everlasting storm." Read more at: http://www.iflscience.com/environment/theres-place-earth-experiences-12-million-lighting-strikes-year#MJeLTGoE5Xs8xR2c.99

  • NWS AKQ MONTHLY RAINFALL ANALYSIS (Virginia)      Don't forget these new products for Virginia from NWS Wakefield compiled from ASOS...COOP...RAWS REPORTS | Monthly Rainfall Analysis - http://www.weather.gov/akq/MONTHLY_RAINFALL_ANALYSIS -

  • DROUGHT MONITOR    http://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/    More information on drought can be found at NOAA's Drought Information Center http://www.drought.noaa.gov/

Glen Allen - from Lowell Koontz: " June was the second driest June on record at the Glen Allen station. The 2.04 inches monthly precipitation was a departure of -1.62 inches. The mean temperature of 75.8°F was a -0.7°F departure. But as noted below the Richmond International Airport has had four of our 13 hottest Junes since 1897; these have occurred since 2007. This is the reason for the high five-year mean average at Glen Allen. Glen Allen had only 8 days in June with measurable precipitation and last year we had 16 days. The 8 days is tied for the least at this station. The airport had 1.25 inches more rain this month than Glen Allen and in May Glen Allen had 0.96 inches more than the airport. Thunderstorms have caused varying rainfall amounts over the region. Thunder was heard on seven days during June but none of these storms were severe here. June also had little cloudiness and was the second clearest June on record. This fact helped give June the second highest temperature range on record at Glen Allen. The highest temperature for the month was 96°F on the 18th and the lowest temperature was 50 on the 2nd, which was a new record low minimum temperature for June. The highest minimum temperature for the month was only 72°F which occurred on the 10th, 18th and 25th, which was a new record LOW high monthly minimum temperature for June. The old record was 73°F. The highest dew point temperature for June was 76.3 °F on the 11th, which was the lowest on record for the month. The maximum wind for the month was 33 mph on the 11th from the south as a thunderstorm approached the station. This was a new record high wind gust for June. " - [ - - ]

Richmond - from contributor Lowell Koontz (GAV): " The Richmond International Airport had 3.39 inches of precipitation for June which was a -0.54 inch departure. The 3.39 inches of precipitation for June was the 56th driest June in the past 127 years. The Richmond International Airport reported the mean temperature for June of 76.6 °F. Only 12 years have been warmer since 1897. It is also interesting that four of these 12 have occurred since 2008. The Airport had one daily record for the month. On June 18th the minimum temperature was 76°F. The previous record high minimum temperature for the date was 74°F in 2004 and 1944. Also only five Junes have had a higher monthly minimum temperature than 76 °F in the past 117 years. The record high minimum for June is 78 °F that occurred in four different years going back to 1897. The highest daily maximum temperature of 97°F also occurred on the 18th.This made the daily mean for the 18th near a record for June of 86.5°F. Only twelve years in the past 117 years have had a hotter day in the month of June. The lowest maximum temperature for June was 78°F, which occurred on June 1st. In the past 117 years only two days in the month of June have had a HIGHER low maximum temperature for the month. They were 81°F in 2008 and 80°F in June of 2010. " - [ + - ]

Richmond - from NWS Wakefield AKQ: " ...Above normal temperatures and below normal precipitation characterized Richmond weather in June ... The average low temperature was 65.8 degrees or 1.3 degrees above normal. The highest temperature was 97 degrees on the 18th. The lowest temperature was 50 degrees on the 2nd. There were 11 days with maximum temperatures above 90 degrees, which is 1.8 days above normal. Precipitation came in at 3.39 inches, which is 0.54 inches below normal. The greatest 24 hour total was 1.87 inches on the 11thand 12th. There were 9 days with measurable rainfall, which is 1.0 day below normal. There were 757.5 accumulated growing degree days (GDD), which was 13 GDD above the 1981 - 2010 normal of 744.5 GDD. The highest was on the 26th, at 30.0 GDD. For 2014 precipitation has reached 19.43 inches, which is 1.39 inches below normal. The average temperature year-to-date is 54.1 degrees, which is 0.5 degrees below normal.
