  • PASSINGS - Member Lauck Walton, Woodstock, Virginia (WOO)   Long-time ACON VA/NC/SC member Lauck Walton, who last posted his monthly weather observations here in fall 2014, has died. During the years of his participation in ACON (20+), Lauck kept meticulous records and never missed a monthly posting of his data, earlier by sending reports through the USPS and then by migrating with us all to email! Mr. Walton attended Randolph-Macon Academy, Front Royal and Randolph-Macon College, Ashland. He served in the US Army for three years. He attended law school at the University of Virginia and worked for 25 years with the law firm of Donovan Leisure Newton & Irvine. After retiring to Woodstock he agreed to work for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation as counsel.

Glen Allen - from Lowell Koontz: " May’s mean temperature was 70.5°F a + 2.1 °F departure and the warmest on record for Glen Allen. The maximum temperature for May was 90°F on the 18th and the minimum was 45°F on the 3rd.The 45°F was the warmest May minimum on record. The average maximum was 81.3°F also a new record high for Glen Allen. May was also the clearest on record and had only eight days with measurable rainfall: the previous record was 10 days. May’s precipitation was only 2.37 inches a departure of negative 1.88 inches and the driest May on record. The average barometer for May was 30.14 inches the highest on record. The highest barometer on the 23rd was 30.48 inches and new record maximum. The lowest barometer of 29.79 inches on May 1st was also a new maximum record. The daily average maximum wind was 16 mph; the previous low record was 16.7 mph. " - [ + - ]

Richmond - from contributor Lowell Koontz (GAV): " The Airport’s mean temperature of 71.5°F was the 6th warmest May since 1880. The five years that were warmer in order were 2004, 1896, 1880, 1991, 1944. It is interesting that the average minimum of 60.5°F was the 2nd warmest and the average maximum of 82.6°F was only the 11th warmest. It was the warm nights of May that placed it in the top 10 warmest Mays. The maximum temperature range for May was 30°F on the 2nd; only 2011 with a low range of 29°F was less since 1897. The Airport’s precipitation for May was 1.61 inches the 14th least rain since 1887 and a total of 0.76 inches less than Glen Allen. Last month they had 2.20 inches more than Glen Allen and 1.80 inches more than Glen Allen for the spring season. The Airport had only 6 days with measurable precipitation in May which is the least since 1965 and four years have had less since 1887. The four were 1911 - 5 days, 1914 - 5 days, 1965 - 4 days, and the record 1936 with only 3 days. The Richmond International Airport had five new daily records that either tied or were broken as listed below. High Maximum Temperatures: May 12th 92°F tied the old record set in 1956, 1914. High Minimums Temperatures: May 10th 68°F tied the old record set in 1927, May 12th 67°F tied the old record set in 1979, 1914, 1905 , and May 18th 72°F new record the old record was 71°F in 1995. Low temperature Range" May 21st 7°F tied the old record set in 1911. The spring average of 59.5°F makes the spring of 2015 the 15th warmest since 1880 as March was the only month that had below average temperatures. The 10.72 inches of spring precipitation made this spring the 80th wettest since 1872 or in 143 years. The departure of +5.1°F for the month of May at the Airport is much higher than Glen Allen’s as May has been warmer in recent years and Glen Allen has a small and recent data base. " - [ + - ]
