    Virginia:

    Arlington - " IN WASHINGTON DC...OCTOBER 2010 WAS WARMER THAN NORMAL...MAKING IT THE EIGHTH STRAIGHT MONTH WITH TEMPERATURES AT LEAST 2.5F DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. TWO DAILY HIGH MINIMUM TEMPERATURES WERE SET OR TIED. THE MINIMUM TEMPERATURE OF 63F ON THE 26TH TIED THE PREVIOUS DAILY HIGH MINIMUM RECORD SET IN 1971. THE MINIMUM TEMPERATURE ON THE 27TH OF 68F BROKE THE PREVIOUS DAILY RECORD HIGH MINIMUM OF 66F LAST SET IN 1977. THE MINIMUM TEMPERATURE DID NOT HIT FREEZING NOR EVEN DROP BELOW 40F THIS MONTH. THE LAST TIME FREEZING TEMPERATURES OCCURRED IN OCTOBER IN WASHINGTON DC WAS IN 1992...ON THE 20TH. PRECIPITATION FOR THE MONTH WAS NEAR NORMAL. NEARLY THREE-FOURTHS OF THE MONTHLY PRECIPITATION FELL ON ONLY TWO DAYS...THE 14TH AND THE 27TH...WHEN 1.26 AND 1.27 INCHES WERE RECORDED RESPECTIVELY. NO SNOW WAS RECORDED THIS MONTH. THE LAST TIME MEASURABLE SNOWFALL WAS RECORDED IN OCTOBER AT WASHINGTON DC WAS ON OCTOBER 10TH 1979...WHEN 1.3 INCHES FELL. " - [ + + ] - Notes from NWS Sterling, VA

    Bridgewater - " The first 26 days of the month, only .08 inches of precipitation fell. It was a very dry month. The precipitation for the year is now 5.46 inches below normal. On October 10, 1979, seven inches of snow fell in Bridgewater. It is the only measurable snowfall that I have recorded for this month in my 45 years in my record keeping on snows.     Chantilly - Russ reports: " October was the eighth straight month in which the average temperature was above normal. Temperatures averaged 2.7° above normal and precipitation was 0.88" below normal. A record low maximum temperature occurred on the 4th (54.9ø). A record high temperature occurred on the 11th (85.0°). A record high minimum temperature occurred on the 26th (60.6°) and 27th (64.9°). A thunderstorm occurred on the 27th. *Please note, anemometer is currently partially obstructed from the Southeast " - [ + - ]

    Dulles - from NWS Sterling (KLWX): " OCTOBER 2010 WAS WARMER THAN NORMAL AT DULLES...MAKING IT THE EIGHTH STRAIGHT MONTH WITH AVERAGE TEMPERATURES OF NEARLY 2 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THE MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE OF 86F ON THE 11TH BROKE THE OLD DAILY MAX RECORD OF 78F SET IN 2001. THE NEXT DAY...THE MAXIMUM OF 83F TIED THE DAILY MAX TEMPERATURE RECORD FOR THE 12TH PREVIOUSLY SET IN 1995. THE MONTHLY AVERAGE MINIMUM TEMPERATURE WAS 47.0F...WHICH IS THE 6TH HIGHEST OCTOBER AVERAGE MINIMUM TEMPERATURE ON RECORD. MINIMUM TEMPERATURES OF 61F ON THE 26TH AND 65F ON THE 27TH BOTH BROKE DAILY HIGH MINIMUM TEMPERATURE RECORDS. THE PREVIOUS DAILY HIGH MINIMUM RECORD FOR THE 26TH WAS 60F IN 1984 AND 64F IN 1977 FOR THE 27TH. THE MINIMUM TEMPERATURE FAILED TO REACH FREEZING AT DULLES FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW...BUT ONLY FOR THE 5TH TIME SINCE RECORDS BEGAN IN 1963. A HIGH TEMPERATURE OF ONLY 56F ON THE 4TH TIED THE PREVIOUS DAILY RECORD LOW MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE FOR THE DATE SET IN 1998. PRECIPITATION FOR THE MONTH WAS SLIGHTLY BELOW NORMAL. IT WAS THE DRIEST MONTH SINCE JUNE OF 2010. NO SNOW WAS RECORDED THIS MONTH. THE LAST TIME MEASURABLE SNOWFALL WAS RECORDED IN OCTOBER AT DULLES WAS OCTOBER 10TH 1979...WHEN 1.3 INCHES FELL. " - [ + - ]

    Glen Allen - Lowell Koontz sends these notes: " October was warmer and wetter than the past three Octobers at the Glen Allen Station. The monthly mean temperature was 60.8°F, a +3.5°F departure when compared to the Ashland, VA average. This was the warmest October since 2007 according to the Richmond International Airport records. The 4.36 inches of precipitation for October at Glen Allen was a +0.93 inch departure when compared to the Ashland, VA average. Almost 50 percent of this precipitation fell in the last five days with 2.06 inches falling on the October 27th. The maximum temperature for October was 89°F and the lowest minimum temperature was 34°F recorded on October 30. There were two frosts in October, one was extremely light on the 22nd and, the second on the 30th, was light and neither killed any plants observed in this area. The Richmond International Airport recorded three records this month. The maximum temperature of 87 recorded on the 12th tied the record for the date; previous records were 1962 and 1954. On October 9th the maximum temperature was 84 after a low of 46 giving a daily temperature range of 38° the highest range ever recorded on that date. On October 27 the minimum temperature was 70° which surpassed the old record of 66 set in 1977. The highest dew point temperature for October was 72.6°F on the 27th at 1650 that made it feel like a summer's day. It occurred during a thunderstorm that later generated a tornado near Cold Harbor Road. The lowest dew point was 30.9°F on the 22nd at 1514. The lowest relative humidity for the month was 25 percent on the 9th giving a large daily temperature range of 37°F. The average temperature range for October was 22.9°F which was 3.8°F more than last year. The maximum wind gust was 30 mph from the NW that occurred on the 1st at 504. October was less windy and was sunnier than October 2009. " - [ + + ] 

    Herndon - Randy reports: " October was near normal for temperature and below normal for precipitation. The temperatures ranged between a high of 87 and a low of 33. The average highs/lows were both within a couple tenths of a degree of normal. On the precipitation side, the month was 0.69" below normal with 2.87" measured. We have now had 39.83" precipitation for the year which is still about 0.5" above normal. " - [ + - ]

    Portsmouth - " October's average temperature was normal while rainfall ran above normal by 1.09" or 130% of normal relative to normal Octobers for the period from 1976 to 2009. Frontal passages were note on the 4th,13th,14th,20th,21st,28th,31st. STATION RECORDS: 6th - TEMPERATURE Minimium Maximum 63° [ previous 64° 1980]; 6th - TEMPERATURE TIED Minimum 45° [previous 1979]; 27th - TEMPERATURE Maximum 84° [previous 81° 1984]; 27th - TEMPERATURE Maximum Minimum 70° [previous 65° 1977]; 28th - RAINFALL 2.30" [previous 1.32" 2006]. " - [ +/- + ] 

    North Carolina:
