Arlington/Washington, D.C. - " OCTOBER IN WASHINGTON DC WAS WARMER THAN NORMAL WITH SLIGHTLY ABOVE NORMAL HIGH TEMPERATURES AND SLIGHTLY ABOVE NORMAL LOW TEMPERATURES. THE HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 91 DEGREES ON OCTOBER 6 WAS TIED FOR THE 6TH WARMEST DAY IN THE MONTH OF OCTOBER ALL TIME. THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 80 DEGREES ON OCTOBER 6 WAS TIED FOR THE 4TH WARMEST IN THE MONTH OF OCTOBER ALL TIME. OCTOBER IN WASHINGTON DC WAS WETTER THAN NORMAL WITH MUCH ABOVE NORMAL PRECIPITATION. A DAILY RECORD RAINFALL OF 2.76 INCHES WAS SET IN WASHINGTON DC ON OCTOBER 11 2013. THIS IS THE 11TH WETTEST SINGLE DAY IN OCTOBER ALL TIME. IT WAS THE WETTEST SINGLE DAY IN OCTOBER SINCE OCTOBER 29 2012 WHEN 3.85 INCHES OF RAIN FELL IN WASHINGTON DC. A RAINFALL TOTAL OF 6.25 INCHES OCCURRED IN OCTOBER. THIS IS THE 12TH WETTEST OCTOBER ALL TIME. " - [ + + ] - from NWS Sterling, VAChantilly - from Russ Topping: " October temperatures and precipitation averaged above normal. The mean monthly temperature was 58.8° (+2.8°). The mean high temperature was 68.5° (+0.3°) and the mean low temperature was 49.1° (+5.3°). A record high temp was tied on the 4th (88°) and broken on the 6th (89°). October saw the end of 90°+ days. After the driest September in six years, this October was the 6th wettest. Rainfall totaled 7.46" (+4.21"), primarily falling on the 7th (1.13"), 10th (1.80"), and 11th (3.58" - new record). Rainfall for the 7 days period 10/7/13 - 10/13/13 totaled 7.40". *Please note, anemometer is currently partially obstructed from the North and East " - [ + + ]
Dulles - from NWS Sterling (KLWX): " OCTOBER AT DULLES AIRPORT HAD NEAR NORMAL HIGH TEMPERATURES AND SLIGHTLY ABOVE NORMAL LOW TEMPERATURES. A DAILY RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 90 DEGREES WAS SET AT DULLES AIRPORT ON OCTOBER 4 2013. THIS WAS THE HIGH TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH AND WAS TIED FOR THE 4TH WARMEST DAY IN THE MONTH OF OCTOBER ALL TIME. A DAILY RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 90 DEGREES WAS SET AT DULLES AIRPORT ON OCTOBER 5 2013. THIS WAS THE HIGH TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH AND WAS TIED FOR THE 4TH WARMEST DAY IN THE MONTH OF OCTOBER ALL TIME. A DAILY RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 89 DEGREES WAS SET AT DULLES AIRPORT ON OCTOBER 6 2013. THIS WAS TIED FOR THE 5TH WARMEST DAY IN THE MONTH OF OCTOBER ALL TIME. THE AVERAGE DAILY TEMPERATURE OF 76 DEGREES ON OCTOBER 5 WAS TIED FOR THE 4TH WARMEST DAY IN THE MONTH OF OCTOBER. THE AVERAGE DAILY TEMPERATURE OF 76 DEGREES ON OCTOBER 6 WAS TIED FOR THE 4TH WARMEST DAY IN THE MONTH OF OCTOBER. THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 58.4 DEGREES WAS TIED FOR THE 7TH WARMEST OCTOBER ALL TIME. OCTOBER AT DULLES AIRPORT WAS WETTER THAN NORMAL WITH MUCH ABOVE NORMAL PRECIPITATION. A DAILY RECORD RAINFALL OF 2.22 INCHES WAS SET AT DULLES AIRPORT ON OCTOBER 10 2013. THIS WAS TIED FOR THE 12TH WETTEST SINGLE DAY IN OCTOBER ALL TIME. A DAILY RECORD RAINFALL OF 3.38 INCHES WAS SET AT DULLES AIRPORT ON OCTOBER 11 2013. THIS WAS THE 5TH WETTEST SINGLE DAY IN OCTOBER ALL TIME. IT WAS THE WETTEST SINGLE DAY SINCE OCTOBER 29 2012 WHEN 4.25 INCHES OF RAIN FELL AT DULLES AIRPORT. A RAINFALL TOTAL OF 7.51 INCHES OCCURRED IN OCTOBER. THIS IS THE 6TH WETTEST OCTOBER ALL TIME. Glen Allen - from Lowell Koontz: " October at Glen Allen was very warm and a little drier than average when compared to the five-year average. The monthly mean temperature was 60.2 °F a +1.0 °F departure when compared to the five year average; only 2010 was warmer. The average minimum temperature of 50.5 °F was a new five year record for Glen Allen. There were 6 days the maximum was 80 °F or more. The minimum temperature on the 26th of 28 °F was the lowest minimum ever recorded here in October. The maximum temperature on October 5th of 90 °F was the highest maximum ever recorded here in October. The 3 °F daily temperature range on the 9th and 10th tied the record low for October. The lowest dew point temperature for October was 24.5 °F on the 25th at 1707 tied for the lowest dew point temperature on record for October. The 2.88 inches of precipitation for October at Glen Allen was a -1.02 inch departure. The maximum wind gust was 29 mph from the SSW that occurred on the 7th at 1159 ahead of a cold front. Herndon - from Randy Ashby: " October was above normal for temperature and precipitation. The temperatures ranged between a high of 88 and a low of 30. The first frost/freeze of the year came on Oct 25 when the temperature dropped to 31, and again hit 30 the next day. On the precipitation side, the month was 3.49” above normal. It rained on 9 days during the month, but most of the rain came on the 9th through the 13th when the remnants of TS Karen came through and we received 6.68”. We are now about 0.5” above normal for the year. " - [ + + ]
Portsmouth - from Bill Trotter: " October's average temperature of 63.3° was 1.7° ABOVE NORMAL. Precipitation (4.47") was ABOVE NORMAL by 0.69" or 118% of the normal October average during the period from 1976 to 2012. Rainfall for the year-to-date through October 31st was 41.87" (-0.86") or 98% of normal. Frontal passages were observed on the 7th, 18th, 20th, 23rd, 25th, and 29th. STATION RECORDS: STATION RECORDS: 6th - TEMPERATURE Maximum 86° [previously 1997]; 9th - RAINFALL 2.04" [previously 0.42" 1977]; 10th - RAINFALL 1.43" [previously 0.87" 1983]; 16th - TEMPERATURE Maximum low 63° [previously 1989]; 25th - TEMPERATURE Minimum high 54 [previously 55 2006]; and 26th - TEMPERATURE Minimum 34 [previously 36 1979]. - [ + + ]
Richmond - from contributor Lowell Koontz (GAV): " The Richmond data base recorded two daily records this month. The high precipitation amount of 1.44 inches fell on October 9th; this was a new daily record since 1872. The previous record was 1.02 inches set in 1996. The 4 °F temperature range also on the 9th tied the 116-year record set in 1952 for the lowest temperature range for the date. Only 15 years have had a lower daily temperature range in October since 1897. The mean temperature was 62.6 °F, which tied for the tenth warmest October since 1897. The highest October temperature was 92 °F recorded on October 5th. Only five Octobers in the past 116 years have had a higher temperature. The record is 99 °F recorded in 1941. The average minimum temperature was 53.0 °F. Only 6 years were higher than this in the past 116 years. The Richmond International Airport recorded 4.25 inches of rain for October making it the 32nd wettest since 1887. The airport and eastern areas of Virginia received much higher rain totals on the 9th and 10th from a low pressure that formed on a cold front just off the VA coast. The airport’s 30-year average is 2.98 inches thus their departure is a positive 1.27 inches. " - [ + - ]
North Carolina:
Raleigh - from contributor Bob Woodson (RAL): " DRY CONDITIONS CONTINUED FROM LAST MONTH WITH THE MONTHLY PRECIPITATION 1.91’ BELOW NORMAL. FOR THE YEAR ,PRECIPITATION IS 6.26” ABOVE NORMAL. NO SEVERE WEATHER WAS OBSERVED, HOWEVER THERE WAS AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF OVERCAST CONDITIONS FROM OCTOBER 8TH THRU THE 13TH. NO THUNDERSTORMS WERE OBSERVED DURING OCTOBER. THE FIRST FREEZE OF THE SEASON OCCURRED ON THE 26TH. " - [ + - ]
