...TEMPERATURES AVERAGE ABOVE NORMAL...

...RAINFALL AVERAGES SLIGHTLY BELOW NORMAL IN VIRGINIA
& WELL-BELOW NORMAL IN THE CAROLINAS...

  • NEW STATION! Seven Corners, Fairfax County, Virginia   We welcome longtime observer John Iekel to our group. He lives in the part of Falls Church that is in Fairfax County outside the technical city limits of Falls Church, and is close to Seven Corners [click here for map location]. John has been taking daily weather observations and keeping records since he was 10 years old. He records daily maxima and minima, as well as precipitation. He uses a u-shaped max/min registering thermometer that he keeps in a weather station his grandfather built for him in 1989, and uses a 5" tube/funnel rain gauge that is in the backyard. He has observed in Falls Church, where he now lives, for 20 years and has observed in other locations as well. His most poignant encounter with weather was being less than 100' from a tornado that suddenly formed and touched ground in a wooded Boy Scout camp when he was 12. A lifelong snow lover, he asks that forecasts not promise him snow and then fail to deliver.

  • 10 Old Virginia Weather Stations   Glen Allen member Lowell Koontz sends this link to a most interesting project, a collection of 10 Virginia stations with information and data from 1849 to 1893. The files are in rather high resolution about 2 megabytes per file. The higher resolution is being used as the old records are hard to read at a lower resolution. The files have been converted from a jpg format to PDF so one may use the + sign to increase the size to enable one to read the hand written documents. The files are large 2 to 3 MB and will download slowly but have better quality as a result. Many thanks Lowell and very impressive work!! View with a click here.

  • Ball Lightning   Our member Lowell Koontz (Glen Allen, Virginia) sends this interesting read on "ball" lightning from Weatherwise magazine View the article with a click here.

  • Calling All Educators! Join the "CoCoRaHS School Network"!   With the beginning of school right around the corner, we want to make our educators out there aware of CoCoRaHS activities for K-12 teachers. With over 500 educators across the country who are already involved, the CoCoRaHS Education Team is continuing to develop and pilot new materials and activities. Students really enjoy collecting data that are actually used by scientists, and teachers are finding that participating with CoCoRaHS meets many of their required standards for science, math and more! We invite all educators, teachers, students, schools, and home schools to join CoCoRaHS! If you or someone you know is interested in becoming part of the "CoCoRaHS School Network", or for more information, please e-mail: education@cocorahs.org
