    Arlington/Washington, D.C. -from NWS LWX, Sterling, VA: " THE MONTHLY AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS WELL ABOVE NORMAL...AND RANKED AS THE 11TH WARMEST OCTOBER ON RECORD. MONTHLY PRECIPITATION WAS WELL BELOW NORMAL...AND RANKED AS THE 19TH DRIEST OCTOBER ON RECORD. THE STRETCH OF ABNORMAL WARMTH FROM THE 17TH THROUGH THE 21ST RANKED AS THE WARMEST 5 DAY PERIOD DURING THE SECOND HALF OF OCTOBER ON RECORD. TWO DAILY WARM LOW TEMPERATURE RECORDS WERE SET LAST MONTH. THE LOW OF 65 DEGREES ON THE 19TH TIED THE RECORD PREVIOUSLY SET IN 1905. THE LOW OF 68 DEGREES ON THE 20TH BROKE THE OLD RECORD OF 64 SET IN 1885 AND 1877. CLIMATE RECORDS HAVE BEEN KEPT AT RONALD REAGAN NATIONAL AIRPORT SINCE AUGUST OF 1941. ADDITIONAL TEMPERATURE RECORDS FOR THE WASHINGTON DC AREA EXTEND BACK TO JANUARY OF 1872. PRECIPITATION RECORDS EXTEND BACK TO JANUARY OF 1871. SNOWFALL RECORDS BEGAN IN JULY OF 1884. " - [ + - ] -

    Chantilly - from Russ Topping: " This October was one of the warmest and driest on record. The October mean monthly temperature was much above normal and precipitation was way below normal. The mean monthly temperature was 61.0° (+5.0°). The mean high temperature was 71.8° (+3.6°) and the mean low temperature was 50.2° (+6.4°). A record high temperature was set on the 17th (86°), 18th (87°), 20th (84°), and 21st (76°). A record maximum low temperature was set on the 19th (63°) and 20th (66°). October precipitation of 0.82” was way below average (-2.43”). Measurable rainfall fell on only 6 days. Maximum 24 hr precipitation of 0.26” fell on the 1st. Thunder was heard on the 30th.     Herndon - from member Randy Ashby: " October was above normal for temperature and below normal for precipitation. The temperatures ranged between a high of 86 and a low of 33 and was 2.5 degrees above normal. We did see scattered frost on the 26th, the day we recorded a low of 33 degrees. On the precipitation side, the month was 3.42” below normal, with only 0.67” measured; we are now about 5.30” below normal for precipitation for the year. " - [ + - ]

    Portsmouth - from Bill Trotter (POR): " OCTOBER 2016 WAS THE 2nd WETTEST OCTOBER IN THE STATION DATABASE TO 1976. The top five wettest Octobers include: 1) 11.60" in 1990 2) 11.56" 2016 3) 8.81" 2012 4) 8.30" 2005 5) 8.08" 1995. The month's average temperature of 64.4° was 2.6° ABOVE NORMAL. Precipitation (11.56") was ABOVE NORMAL by 7.62" or 293% of the October average rainfall during the period from 1976 to 2015. At month's end, rainfall for the year totaled 63.15" (+19.42" or 144% of normal). Frontal passages occurred on the 4th (onshore), 9th, 14th, 21st, 24th, 28th, and 31st. STATION RECORDS: 1st - TEMPERATURE Maximum Minimum 72° [previous 70° 1979], 8th - WIND GUST 56mph [previous 46mph in 1996], 8th - RAINFALL 9.19" [previous 6.05" in 2005], 8-9th - RAINFALL 11.14" - ALL-TIME MAX STORM TOTAL surpassing the 10.10" of 9/15-16/2010; this rainfall total resulted from the passing of Hurricane Matthew to the south, then southeast and east of the station. 9th - WIND GUST 48mph [previous 38mph in 2013], 10th - WIND GUST 35mph [30mph], and 19th - TEMPERATURE Maximum 85° [previous 84° 2007].     Glen Allen - from Lowell Koontz (GAV): " Glen Allen had the warmest October on record. The month started out cloudy and wet with low temperature ranges and 88% of the month’s precipitation on the 8th and 9th. There was only 0.10 inches of rain for the rest of the month. The last two-thirds of the month was sunny with large temperature ranges and heavy dews and no killing frost. Glen Allen also had the second highest average ground temperature at one foot on record for October. The monthly mean temperature was 62.7°F +3.3°F departure when compared to the eight-year average. The lowest minimum temperature was 37.9°F on the 23rd which is the highest minimum temperature on record for October. The month’s maximum temperature of 89.3°F on the 19th was the second highest maximum temperature on record for October and the highest for so late in October. The 3.43 inches of precipitation on the 8th and 9th was from Tropical Storm Matthew and both the calendar day rain (2.81 inches) and the 24-hour rainfall (3.43 inches) were the most precipitation since Tropical Storm Irene on Aug. 27, 2011. The total October precipitation was 4.04 inches which was a 0.60-inch departure. There were seven days with measurable precipitation. The maximum wind gust of 38 mph on the 9th was from Matthew which set a record for the maximum wind gust for October. The highest one day wind run on the 9th was 206.8 miles which was the second highest on record for October. This October was the clearest on record and the 5th clearest for all months. " - [ + + ]

    Richmond - from contributor Lowell Koontz (GAV): " The Richmond Airport had two daily records this month. The 3.31 inches of rain on the 8th set a new record for the date; the previous record was 2.94 inches in 1996. This was also the 6th greatest October precipitation in a calendar day. The total precipitation for October was 4.24 inches making it the 33rd wettest October. This was also a +1.26-inch departure for October. The 87°F maximum temperature on the 19th tied the record set in 1938 for the date and was also the high temperature for the month. The October mean temperature was 62.4°F which was the 14th warmest October since 1897 and was a +2.7° departure from average. The lowest daily mean temperature was 50°F on the 26th which was the 10th warmest on record for October. The highest minimum temperature was 61°F on the 8th. Only 1995 with a minimum of 63°F was higher for the month of October. " - [ + + ]

    Fayetteville - from NWS RAH: " A RECORD RAINFALL OF 14.00 INCHES WAS SET AT FAYETTEVILLE REGIONAL AIRPORT ON OCTOBER 8TH. THIS BROKE THE OLD RECORD OF 3.40 INCHES SET IN 1996. THIS ALSO BROKE THE ALL-TIME DAILY RECORD RAINFALL OF 8.25 INCHES SET ON SEPTEMBER 16TH OF 1989. " - [ + + ]

    Greensboro - from NWS RAH: " A RECORD DAILY MAXIMUM RAINFALL OF 3.20 INCHES WAS SET AT PIEDMONT TRIAD INTL AIRPORT ON OCTOBER 8TH. THIS BROKE THE OLD RECORD OF 1.60 INCHES SET IN 1910. A RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 88 DEGREES WAS SET AT PIEDMONT TRIAD INTL AIRPORT ON OCTOBER 19TH. THIS BROKE THE OLD RECORD OF 86 DEGREES SET IN 1938. A RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 84 DEGREES WAS SET AT PIEDMONT TRIAD INTL AIRPORT ON OCTOBER 30TH. THIS BROKE THE OLD RECORD OF 83 DEGREES SET IN 1996. " - [ + + ]

    Raleigh - from NWS RAH: " A RECORD RAINFALL OF 6.45 INCHES WAS SET AT RALEIGH-DURHAM INTL AIRPORT ON OCTOBER 8TH. THIS BROKE THE OLD RECORD OF 2.54 INCHES SET IN 1996. THIS ALSO BROKE THE ALL-TIME DAILY RECORD RAINFALL OF 5.96 INCHES SET ON OCTOBER 1ST OF 1929. A RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 88 DEGREES WAS SET AT RALEIGH-DURHAM INTL AIRPORT ON OCTOBER 19TH. THIS BROKE THE OLD RECORD OF 87 SET IN 1941. " - [ + + ]

    Raleigh - from member Bob Woodson (RAL): " OCTOBER WAS 'VERY WET YET VERY DRY' AS 6.37” WAS RECORDED FROM HURRICANE MATTHEW WHILE THE REST OF THE MONTH ONLY 0.03” WAS MEASURED. PRECIPITATION FOR THE YEAR IS NOW 11.6 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. THE AVERAGE DAILY TEMPERATUE WAS 2.4 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. " - [ + + ]
