Arlington - " THE MAIN STORY THIS MONTH IN WASHINGTON DC WAS THE PERSISTENT AND UNUSUALLY WET CONDITIONS. RAINFALL OF 8.84 INCHES THIS MONTH RANKS AS THE 5TH WETTEST SEPTEMBER ON RECORD...AND THE WETTEST SEPTEMBER SINCE 10.27 INCHES FELL IN 1999. THE BULK OF THE MONTHLY RAINFALL OCCURRED DURING A FOUR-DAY PERIOD FROM THE 5TH-8TH AS THE REMNANTS OF TROPICAL STORM LEE IMPACTED THE REGION. DURING THIS PERIOD...DAILY RAINFALL TOTALED AT LEAST 0.90 INCHES EACH DAY. A STRETCH OF FOUR-CONSECUTIVE DAYS OF DAILY RAINFALL OF 0.90 INCHES OR GREATER HAS BEEN RECORDED ONLY ONE OTHER TIME IN WASHINGTON DC...SEPTEMBER 23RD-26TH 1975...SINCE OFFICIAL RAINFALL RECORDS BEGAN IN 1871. SEPTEMBER 2011 WAS THE SECOND MONTH IN A ROW WITH AT LEAST EIGHT INCHES OF RAINFALL. CONSECUTIVE MONTHS WITH MONTHLY RAINFALL OF AT LEAST EIGHT INCHES HAVE ONLY BEEN REPORTED ONE OTHER TIME...IN 1905 9.95 INCHES FELL IN JULY FOLLOWED BY 9.75 INCHES IN AUGUST. MEASURABLE RAINFALL WAS REPORTED ON 14 DAYS THIS MONTH...MAKING IT ONLY THE SECOND SEPTEMBER SINCE 1934 TO HAVE MEASURABLE RAINFALL RECORDED ON THIS MANY DAYS. THE OTHER SEPTEMBER HAVING 14 DAYS OF MEASURABLE RAINFALL WAS IN 1999. AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURES WERE NEAR NORMAL. DUE TO THE PERSISTENT CLOUD COVER...MONTHLY MAX TEMPERATURES WERE SLIGHTLY BELOW NORMAL WHILE MIN TEMPERATURES WERE SLIGHTLY ABOVE NORMAL. SEPTEMBER 2011 WAS THE FIRST MONTH WHERE AVERAGE TEMPERATURES WERE NOT ABOVE NORMAL SINCE MARCH 2011. TEMPERATURES FAILED TO REACH 90 DEGREES DURING THE ENTIRE MONTH. " - [ + + ] - Notes from NWS Sterling, VA

Bridgewater - " September was a wet month. However, we had no flooding here. I didn't get one drop in our basement. The grass stayed green most of the summer. On October 10, 1979, we had 7 inches of snow in Bridgewater. This was the greatest surprise for weather in my lifetime. Even the pro weather people were caught off guard. " - [ +/- +] - notes from Clayton

Chantilly - Russ adds: " The story for September was the incredible rainfall totals, primarily on the 3rd thru the 9th, and seemingly endless days without seeing the sun. In fact we had over 1" of rain on the 5th (1.82"), 6th (1.36"), 7th (1.33" - new daily record) and 8th (1.79") as the remnants of Hurricane Lee lingered over us. With 17 days of measurable rainfall, we set a new monthly record. Temperatures failed to reach 90° even once, primarily due to the endless cloud cover, with a mean monthly temperature of 69.6°, mean high temperature of 76.5°, and mean low temperature of 62.6°. A record low high temp was tied on the 6th (63.5°) and broken on the 17th (62.4°). A record high low temp was set on the 9th (69.1°) and 27th (69.4°) and tied on the 25th (68.3°), 26th (68.3°), and 28th (65.9°). Precipitation was 4.60" above normal. Thunderstorms rolled through on the 3rd, 7th, 8th, 11th, 14th, and 28th. Dense fog observed on the 23rd and 29th. *Please note, anemometer is currently partially obstructed from the North and East " - [ + + ]

Dulles - from NWS Sterling (KLWX): " THE MAIN STORY THIS MONTH AT DULLES WAS THE PERSISTENT AND UNUSUALLY WET CONDITIONS. THE MONTHLY RAINFALL OF 7.93 INCHES NOW RANKS THIS MONTH AS THE 5TH WETTEST SEPTEMBER ON RECORD...THE WETTEST SEPTEMBER SINCE 1999 WHEN 9.32 INCHES FELL...AND THE WETTEST MONTH SINCE MAY 2009 WHEN 10.26 INCHES WAS RECORDED. THE BULK OF THE MONTHLY RAINFALL THIS MONTH OCCURRED DURING A FOUR-DAY PERIOD FROM THE 5TH-8TH AS THE REMNANTS OF TROPICAL STORM LEE IMPACTED THE REGION. DURING THIS PERIOD...DAILY RAINFALL TOTALED AT LEAST ONE INCH EACH DAY. FOUR-CONSECUTIVE DAYS OF DAILY RAINFALL OF ONE INCH OR GREATER HAS BEEN RECORDED ONLY ONE OTHER TIME AT DULLES...SEPTEMBER 23RD-26TH 1975...SINCE OFFICIAL RAINFALL RECORDS BEGAN IN 1962. ONE DAILY MAXIMUM RAINFALL RECORD WAS BROKEN ON THE 8TH. THE DAILY RAINFALL OF 1.11 INCHES THAT DAY BROKE THE PREVIOUS RECORD OF 0.56 INCHES SET IN 1969. MEASURABLE RAINFALL WAS REPORTED ON 15 DAYS THIS MONTH. ONLY 1975 HAD MORE DAYS IN SEPTEMBER WITH MEASURABLE RAINFALL...16 DAYS. DUE TO THE PERSISTENT CLOUD COVER...MONTHLY MAX TEMPERATURES WERE SLIGHTLY BELOW NORMAL WHILE MIN TEMPERATURES WERE ABOVE NORMAL. FOR THE MONTH...THREE DAILY RECORD LOW MAX TEMPERATURES WERE EITHER TIED OR BROKEN...ON THE 6TH...16TH AND 17TH...WHILE THREE DAILY RECORD HIGH MIN TEMPERATURES WERE EITHER TIED OR BROKEN...ON THE 9TH...26TH AND 27TH. TEMPERATURES FAILED TO REACH 90 DEGREES DURING THE MONTH. " - [ + + ]

Glen Allen - Lowell sends these notes: " September was warmer and much wetter than average as the monthly mean temperature was 72.2°F, a 0.4°F departure based on my three year average and a +1.9°F departure when compared to Ashland, Virginia (new thirty year average). The maximum temperature for September was 89°F on the 4th and 14th; the lowest minimum was 47°F recorded on the 16th. The Richmond International Airport mean temperature was 72.5°, which was the 25th warmest September since 1897. But on the 17th the Airport had a high of only 61°F, which was a new record low maximum temperature for the date, and a daily range of only 4°F, which tied the record for the lowest daily temperature range. The two previous records were 62°F in 1924 and a 4°F daily temperature range in 1957 and 1938. The main event of the month occurred from the 6th to the 8th. The remnants of Lee gave record rainfall amounts and many places received more rain than Glen Allen. The 6.51 inches of precipitation for September at Glen Allen was a departure of +2.58 inch when compared to the Ashland, VA average and a new record rainfall amount for September. It was also the wettest month since December of 2009 at Glen Allen. The maximum precipitation recorded in a day here was 2.27 inches on the 7th. September had measurable precipitation on twelve days but 17 days when counting trace amounts and was the second cloudiest month on record at Glen Allen. The cloudiness contributed to the highest monthly average relative humidity and highest average monthly minimum temperature on record for this station. (Records since August of 2008) The average relative humidity was 77.2%, which was 13.7 % more than last September because of the cloudiness. After the only cool period just after mid-September, that lasted four days, Glen Allen had an exceptionally cloudy showery and muggy weather pattern that lasted until the end of the month. The Richmond International Airport had 3.76 inches on the 7th a new record rainfall amount for the date (previous record was 2.15 in 1934) and 8.95 inches for the month, which is the 9th greatest rainfall total for September since 1887. " - [ + + ]

Herndon - Randy sends these notes: " September was close to normal for temperature, but well-above normal for precipitation. The temperatures ranged between a high of 88 and a low of 42. On the precipitation side, the month was 6.09" above normal with 11.33" measured. This was mostly due to the remnants of TS Lee, which dumped heavy rainfall amounts over the area from the 5th to the 9th totaling 10.18" for the five-day period. The heaviest rain fell on the 8th when 6.04" fell which caused some flooding in the area. Over 1" of rain fell on each day from the 5th thru the 8th. We had rain on 17 days spread throughout the month. For the year, we are now over 4" above normal. With so much rain and cloudy conditions through the month, the average humidity was very high at 84.2%, the highest I have recorded for any month in the past five years. " - [ - + ]
