SUMMARY OF CLIMATOLOGICAL DATA

SEPTEMBER 2014

...TEMPERATURES AVERAGE ABOVE NORMAL...

...RAINFALL AVERAGE IS ABOVE NORMAL...

  • 10 Old Virginia Weather Stations   Glen Allen member Lowell Koontz sends this link to a most interesting project, a collection of 10 Virginia stations with information and data from 1849 to 1893. The files are in rather high resolution about 2 megabytes per file. The higher resolution is being used as the old records are hard to read at a lower resolution. The files have been converted from a jpg format to PDF so one may use the + sign to increase the size to enable one to read the hand written documents. The files are large 2 to 3 MB and will download slowly but have better quality as a result. Many thanks Lowell and very impressive work!! View with a click here.

  • Ball Lightning   Our member Lowell Koontz (Glen Allen, Virginia) sends this interesting read on "ball" lightning from Weatherwise magazine View the article with a click here.

  • Calling All Educators! Join the "CoCoRaHS School Network"!   With the beginning of school right around the corner, we want to make our educators out there aware of CoCoRaHS activities for K-12 teachers. With over 500 educators across the country who are already involved, the CoCoRaHS Education Team is continuing to develop and pilot new materials and activities. Students really enjoy collecting data that are actually used by scientists, and teachers are finding that participating with CoCoRaHS meets many of their required standards for science, math and more! We invite all educators, teachers, students, schools, and home schools to join CoCoRaHS! If you or someone you know is interested in becoming part of the "CoCoRaHS School Network", or for more information, please e-mail: education@cocorahs.org

    Virginia:

Arlington/Washington, D.C. - " THE MONTHLY AVERAGE TEMPERATURE IN WASHINGTON DC FOR SEPTEMBER 2014 WAS ABOVE NORMAL. PRECIPITATION WAS WELL BELOW NORMAL. TOTAL PRECIPITATION TIED FOR THE 18TH DRIEST SEPTEMBER ON RECORD...TIED WITH SEPTEMBER OF 1895. THERE WERE SIX 90 DEGF DAYS THIS MONTH...MATCHING THE TOTAL OF 90 DEGF DAYS IN SEPTEMBER OF LAST YEAR. ON AVERAGE THERE ARE THREE 90 DEGF DAYS IN SEPTEMBER. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THERE HAS BEEN AT LEAST TWICE THE NORMAL NUMBER OF 90 DEGF DAYS IN THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER IN BACK-TO-BACK YEARS SINCE 1930-31. " - [ + - ] - from NWS Sterling, VA

Dulles - from NWS Sterling (KLWX): " THE MONTHLY AVERAGE TEMPERATURE AT DULLES INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT FOR SEPTEMBER 2014 WAS NEAR NORMAL. PRECIPITATION WAS WELL BELOW NORMAL. THIS SEPTEMBER WAS THE 4TH DRIEST ON RECORD. THE THREE DRIER SEPTEMBERS ON RECORD ARE 1978 WITH 0.78 INCHES...1967 WITH 0.62 INCHES...AND 2005 WITH 0.15 INCHES. THE TWO 90 DEGF DAYS OBSERVED IN SEPTEMBER 2014 FELL SHORT OF THE AVERAGE NUMBER OF THREE. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2011 THAT THE NUMBER OF 90 DEGF DAYS IN THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER HAS BEEN BELOW NORMAL. " - [ - - ]

Herndon - from member Randy Ashby: September was about normal for temperature and well below normal for precipitation. The temperatures ranged between a high of 91 and a low of 44 and was 0.8 degrees below normal. The average low temperature of 62.26 was the lowest average temperature ever recorded at this site in August. On the precipitation side, the month was 3.33? below normal, with only 1.46? measured. Of this amount 1.05? came on the 24/25 Sep. The lack of rainfall necessitated the watering of flowers and lawns for the first time this summer. We are still almost 8.5? above normal for precipitation for the year. " - [ - - ]

Portsmouth - from Bill Trotter: " September's average temperature of 73.3° was 0.8° ABOVE NORMAL. Precipitation (14.89") was WELL-ABOVE NORMAL by 9.55" or 297% of the September average during the period from 1976 to 2013. Two-day rainfall total of 9.43" on calendar days September 8th-9th with flash flooding over Southeastern Virginia including Portsmouth, a result mostly from training thunderstorms. Rainfall for the year through September 30th was 59.64" (+20.19" or 151% of normal). STATION RECORDS: 1st - TEMPERATURE TIED Maximum Low 75° [previously 1980]; 9th - RAINFALL 4.60" [previously 1.52" 1999]. - [ + + ]

Glen Allen - from Lowell Koontz: " September started out as the hottest September on record with a 95°F maximum and a 76°F minimum. The 76°F minimum is not only a new record high minimum for the date but also the month. The daily mean temperature on the first was 85.5°F a new daily high mean not just for the day but also for the month of September. The first day also had the highest dew point and highest heat index of 104.8°F ever recorded at this station for September. The 2nd day had a record 98°F maximum and a minimum of 72°F. The 98°F maximum was new record high maximum temperature for September and also equaled the hottest day of the summer. The monthly mean temperature was 71.2°F, a +0.2 °F departure based on the six year average. The lowest minimum was 50°F recorded on the 23rd and 27th that was the 3rd highest minimum temperature for Sep. (records since 2008). The average temperature range for the month was 18.0 °F the second lowest for September. This was at least in part due to the fact September was the 2nd cloudiest September recorded at Glen Allen. This was the third driest September on record at Glen Allen with only 2.33 inches of precipitation and the third consecutive month with below average rainfall. There were 11 days with measurable precipitation but 7 of these were 0.10 inches or less. There were no strong storms and the lowest barometric pressure was only 29.69 inches on the 21st. Only September 2013 recorded higher minimum pressure for the month. The maximum barometric reading this September was 30.40 inches which ties with 2008 record. The maximum wind gust for the month was only 23 mph from the SSW on the 11th at 0950 which was the 2nd least on record at Glen Allen for September. " - [ + - ]

Richmond - from contributor Lowell Koontz (GAV): " The 101°F on the 2nd was not only a new daily record but only two years 1953 and 1954 have had a higher maximum temperature in September. The 101°F was also the hottest day of the summer. The 75°F minimum on the 1st was not only a new daily record but only 5 Septembers since 1897 have had a higher minimum temperature. The daily mean on the 2nd was 87.0°F ties with five other Septembers for the warmest day in September since 1897. Also the 74°F minimum recorded on the 6th tied the daily record with 1979 and 1910. The mean temperature for the month was 72.7 °F which was the 21st warmest September since 1897. The minimum monthly average was 63.5°F and only 9 Septembers in the past 117 years have had a higher minimum monthly average. The Airport had an average daily temperature range of 18.3°F. Only 25 Septembers in the past 117 years have had a lower daily temperature range. The Airport had only 1.35 inches of precipitation making it the driest September since 2007 when 1.11 inches was recorded. Only 22 Septembers have been drier in the past 117 years. " - [ + - ]

Raleigh - from contributor Bob Woodson (RAL): " The average daily temperature was 70.9 degrees or one degree below normal. For 2014, only the month of May had the average daily temperature above normal (+1.7 degrees). Not only mild temperatures continue, the above normal precipitation pattern continued with September rainfall 2.93 inches above normal and the year to date precipitation 9.16? above normal.
