    Virginia:

    Arlington/Washington, D.C. - "WASHINGTON DC...REAGAN NATIONAL AIRPORT... THE MONTHLY AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS WELL ABOVE NORMAL...AND RANKED AS THE 8TH WARMEST SEPTEMBER ON RECORD. MONTHLY PRECIPITATION WAS WELL BELOW NORMAL...BUT WAS STILL THE WETTEST SEPTEMBER SINCE 2012. SEVEN DAYS LAST MONTH REACHED OR EXCEEDED 90 DEGREES...THE HIGHEST NUMBER OF DAYS IN SEPTEMBER SINCE 2010. A RECORD HIGH MINIMUM TEMPERATURE OF 75 DEGREES WAS SET ON THE 9TH...TYING THE OLD RECORD SET IN 1884. " - [ + - ] - from NWS Sterling, VA

    Chantilly - " September temperatures were much above normal and precipitation was well below normal. The mean monthly temperature was 76.5° (+1.1°). The mean high temperature was 83.3° (+3.9°) and the mean low temperature was 61.7° (+5.4°). A new daily high temperature record was set on the 8th (94.2°) and 9th (95.8°). A new daily high minimum temperature record was set on the 9th (72.3°) and 29th (69.2°), and tied on the 4th (71.2°). September precipitation of only 2.75” was much below average (-1.17”). Until the 29th, only 0.90” of rain had fallen over 7 days. No precipitation records were set.     Seven Corners/Fairfax County - from member John Iekel: " WARMER THAN NORMAL. RAINFALL TOTAL FOR THE MONTH IS MISLEADING – IT WAS VERY DRY UNTIL MONTH’S END. THE 2.57” THAT FELL ON THE 29TH FELL IN JUST 4 HOURS AND WAS MORE THAN THE RAINFALL OF ALL OF AUGUST AND THE FIRST 28 DAYS OF SEPTEMBER COMBINED! " - [ + - ]

    Dulles - from NWS Sterling (KLWX): "THE MONTHLY AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS WELL ABOVE NORMAL...AND RANKED AS THE 7TH WARMEST SEPTEMBER ON RECORD. MONTHLY PRECIPITATION WAS WELL BELOW NORMAL...AND RANKED AS THE 20TH DRIEST SEPTEMBER ON RECORD. SEVEN DAYS LAST MONTH REACHED OR EXCEEDED 90 DEGREES...THE HIGHEST NUMBER OF DAYS IN SEPTEMBER SINCE 2010. A RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 93 WAS SET ON THE 8TH...TYING THE OLD RECORD SET IN 2010...2007...1985 AND 1976. THREE RECORD DAILY HIGH MINIMUM TEMPERATURE RECORDS WERE SET LAST MONTH. A LOW TEMPERATURE OF 71 ON THE 4TH TIED THE OLD RECORD SET IN 2012. A LOW TEMPERATURE OF 72 ON THE 9TH BROKE THE OLD RECORD OF 68 SET IN 2011...2008...1996 AND 1995. A LOW TEMPERATURE OF 69 ON THE 29TH BROKE THE OLD RECORD OF 68 SET IN 1986. " - [ + - ]

    Herndon - from member Randy Ashby: " September was above normal for temperature and below normal for precipitation. The temperatures ranged between a high of 93 and a low of 48 and was 1.7 degrees above normal. On the precipitation side, the month was 1.12” Below normal, with 3.62” measured. Most of this rainfall came on the last three days of the month when 2.06” fell with 1.93 falling on the 29th. We are now 1.4” below normal for the year. " - [ + - ]

    Portsmouth - from Bill Trotter: " The month's average temperature of 75.4° was 2.8° ABOVE NORMAL. Precipitation (5.40") was ABOVE NORMAL by 0.05" or 101% of the September average during the period from 1976 to 2014. Rainfall for the year through September 30th was 38.95" (-0.53" or 99% of normal).     Glen Allen - from Lowell Koontz: " September was much drier than average for the first 24 days then turned cloudy and wet. The first ten days were very warm and dry for September followed by a 3 day cool period then average temperatures until the 20th followed by cool days but warm nights for the rest of the month. Overall September was warmer and wetter than average when compared to the seven year average. The monthly mean temperature was 72.9°F a +1.9°F departure when compared to the average. The lowest minimum temperature was 4 °F on the 14th and was only 1°F below the record average minimum temperature for September. The month’s maximum temperature of 95°F on September 2 was 2°F above the six year average monthly maximum. The 4.19 inches of precipitation for September was a +0.59 inch departure with 11 days of measurable precipitation. Eleven is the second largest number of measurable precipitation days for September on record yet September was very dry until the 25th as 59% of the month’s precipitation occurred in the last 5 days. The maximum wind gust was 24 mph on the 30th which was the 3rd lowest on record. The highest barometer reading was 30.40 which tied the 7 year maximum for September and the lowest September barometer was 29.67 inches which was only 0.05 inches from being the highest minimum reading for the month. The 73°F minimum on the 9th was the highest minimum temperature for the date; the previous record was 72°F in 2008, 1942, and 1929. The 70°F minimum on the 28th was the highest minimum temperature for the date; the previous record was 69°F in 1933. The 72°F minimum on the 29th was the highest minimum temperature for the date; the previous record was 71°F in 1979, 1959, and 1901. The average minimum temperature was 64.7°F which was the fifth warmest on record. The average maximum temperature was 84.1°F. Only 16 years have had a higher average maximum temperature since 1897. The September mean temperature was 74.4°F which was the 9th warmest September since 1897 and the 12th warmest since 1880. The highest temperature this month was 95°F recorded on September 2nd. The lowest minimum temperature was 52°F and only five years have had a higher minimum temperature since 1897. The lowest daily mean temperature was 64.5°F on the 14th. Only 4 years 1921, 1933, 1968, 2002 were higher than this in the past 118 years. The Richmond International Airport recorded 3.43 inches of rain and the 30 year average for the month is 4.13 inches making a departure of negative 0.70 inches. " - [ + - ]
