  • STATE CLIMATE SERIES AT CoCoRAHs   Check-out the "CoCoRaHS State Climates" series page. This series ran as part of the CoCoRaHS Message of the Day during 2011. In putting together our series, we asked climatologists from each of the country's 50 states to write an informational short narrative summarizing their state's climate along with links to further resources. Some are short, some are long, some have catchy titles. The page below will give you a handy way of looking at each state's narrative as well as their climate summaries. View the series at http://www.cocorahs.org/Content.aspx?page=50StatesClimates.

Chantilly - from Russ Topping: " The September mean monthly temperature was much above normal and precipitation was slightly above normal. The mean monthly temperature was 74.2° (+6.3°). The mean high temperature was 83.6° (+4.2°) and the mean low temperature was 64.8° (+8.5°!!). A record high temperature was set on the 8th (99°), 9th (101°), and 10th (100°) and tied on the 14th (95°) and 23rd (93°). A record maximum low temperature was set on the 9th (73°), 10th (73°), 18th (70°), and 19th (70°) and tied on the 7th (70°), and 8th (72°). September precipitation of 4.15” was above average (+0.23”). However, it doesn’t tell the whole story. Between the 2nd and the 18th, no rain fell. In fact, there were only 7 days with measurable rain. Maximum daily precipitation of 1.35” fell on the 28th. Maximum 24 hr precipitation of 1.73” fell on the 28th and 29th, providing much needed relief to stressed lawns and trees. Herndon - from member Randy Ashby: " September was above normal for temperature and below normal for precipitation. The temperatures ranged between a high of 95 and a low of 51 and was 2.9 degrees above normal. We had 7 days with the high at or above 90 degrees, giving us a total of 40 days for the summer. On the precipitation side, the month was 0.94” below normal, with 3.76” measured; 2.74” of this came during the last 5 days of the month. We are now about 1.89” below normal for precipitation for the year. " - [ + - ]

Portsmouth - from Bill Trotter (POR): " SEPTEMBER 2016 WAS THE 2ND WETTEST & 2ND WARMEST SEPTEMBER IN THE DATABASE TO 1976. The top five wettest Septembers include: 1) 21.91" in 1991 2) 15.47" 2016 3) 15.28" 2010 4) 14.89" 2014 5) 10.29" 1979. Glen Allen - from Lowell Koontz (GAV): " September at Glen Allen was the warmest, wettest, greatest number of days with rain, cloudiest, most humid (+5% departure), and the lowest temperature range (-3.9°F departure). The monthly mean temperature was 74.6°F a +3.3°F departure when compared to the average. The lowest minimum temperature for the month was only 57°F; the previous high minimum was only 52°F in 2010. The month’s maximum temperature of 97°F on September 9th was 3.8°F above the seven-year average monthly maximum. The 6.69 inches of precipitation for September was a +3.02 inch departure with a record 13 days of measurable precipitation. However, September had a very dry period of 10 days without rain from the 9th to the 18th. Because of the cloudiness and high relative humidity, the average temperature range was only 15.8 degrees for September. On the 21st the temperature range was only 2.9°F a new record for any date September in the past seven years. It is interesting there were no strong low pressures; the lowest pressure was only 29.82 inches which is the highest minimum pressure ever recorded in September. The month also had the highest minimum dew point for September. On the 10th the highest heat index was recorded. The average ground temperature at a foot averaged 75.1°F a new maximum record. Also there were only 6 nights that the minimum didn’t dropped below 70°F and only one night with a minimum less than 60°F. " - [ + + ]

Richmond - from contributor Lowell Koontz (GAV): " The Richmond Airport had a mean temperature of 74 degrees which was a departure of +3.4 degrees making it the 13th highest mean temperature for September since 1897. The average minimum temperature was 65.9 which was the 2nd highest in the past 119 years; only September 1921 was higher by 0 .5 degrees. The average temperature range was 16.1°F; only 1979 had a lower temperature range of 15.6°F. On the 21st the airport set a record low temperature range for the date of 4°F; only 8 years have a lower temperature range for any date in the month. The average minimum temperature was 65.9°F which was a departure of +5.8°F. The lowest minimum temperature was 58°F which is the highest minimum on record for September since 1897. The Airport set two daily records, the 4.74 inches of precipitation on the 28th and the low temperature range of 4°F on the 21st. The Richmond International Airport recorded 11.19 inches of precipitation giving a departure of +7.06 inches also making this the 2nd wettest September in the past 143 years. The 4.74 inches on the 28th was the 2nd greatest rainfall in a calendar day; only the 4.91 inches that occurred on September 5, 1935 was greater. The Airport had 14 days with measurable precipitation which was the most recorded in September except for three years (1993,1945,1888). Only September 1999 with 16.60 inches because of Tropical Storm Floyd had more precipitation in the month of September. " - [ + + ]
