The 9.49" of rain recorded during May 2012 in the West Cradock area of Portsmouth, Virginia, established a NEW STATION MAY MONTHLY
RAINFALL RECORD. The Top 5 Wettest Mays include: 1) 9.49" 2012, 2) 8.06" 1986, 3) 7.76" 1978, 4) 7.21" 1979, and 5) 5.77" 2003.
May's average temperature (70.6°) was 2.9° ABOVE NORMAL. Precipitation was WELL-ABOVE NORMAL by 5.26" or 224% of normal relative to
normal Mays for the period from 1977 to 2011. Frontal passages occurred on the 2nd (backdoor onshore/coastal), 5th; 9th
